Just a heads up for anyone that uses the Nobby's graph:

Seems the wind direction vane is on the blink. Was blowing a ENE this arvo though the wind meter was reading SE.

Yeah, it's a pretty dodgy wind meter, always reading a few knots more than it actually is, though physically looking at the meter this afternoon, it seems that the wind direction vane has broken/been vandalised.

I have used this before as well and used it yesterday when nobby's was messing with my brain. They have also just installed the Merewether-Dixon Park camera as a robotic cam. Several streaming options depending on your connection. The Newcastle beach camera is ok but doesn't show a lot of beach / wind conditions.

Was at stockton today and yesterday and the Nobby's reading are clearly wrong.

I sent an email to the met office this morning and actuall got a reply, he informed me that
"I had a look at the wind readings for Nobby's and there were Northerlies up until 0330 vis.
N at 0330
ESE at 0400
SE at 1130
SSE at 1200
S at 1500
E at 2200 and back to
NE at 2330
These winds are consistent with a frontal change which came thru your area yesterday."

He was actually from Coffs habour so I have sent back to let him know that after a field test today they are definitely incorrect, shall be interesting to see if it gets fixed in the near future.

I also gave him the link to this topic.

It was NE today at Nobbys when I got there and the reading was SSE when I left home - about 5 mins after it updated. It takes me about five mins to get to nobbys from home, so it's a pretty fast change.

As I mentioned in my second post, physically looking at the wind meter, the direction vane has been vandalised / fallen off. This appears to have happend on friday night / saturday morning.

Well done ric for getting through to someone at BOM, but it is definately broken - wind histories for sat/sun afternoon show south/south east for nobby's, yet for the same time period, williamtown (only 14km away) show's ENE / NE.

Hopefully when they fix the direction vane they can calibrate the speed sensor.

Well guys we could talk about it all week and achieve nothing, send a couple of emails to the right people and the wheels start to turn.

"Hello Ric

Thanks for questioning the direction at Nobby’s.

I noticed that it was reporting a different direction from home on Saturday and so wasn’t surprised to see your comments when I arrived at work this morning. I have asked our Techs to check it as soon as possible to confirm the fault. At first I thought it may have been the location of the slow moving trough over the area over the past few days but it now appears to be constantly out by about 90 degrees.

Regards
John James"
