I'm coming back to Australia for a mate's wedding at Point Lookout, North Stradbroke in the first week of October. I was wondering if any of you guys have any tips on where to kite on North Straddie (preferably near Point Lookout) and anything I should watch out for.

I've got about three years experience kiting, so waves up to 2m and everything that goes with it is not a problem. I won't have a 4WD.

aaah north straddie, sit back enjoy the tranquility and cut piss at a great wedding with your friends.
then..... go kitesurfing.
straddie works great on northerlies, and the beaches at cylinder west to adder rocks will be side-on to onshore with usually small to medium swell. northerlies are predominant at this time of the year so you should be laughing.
but if it is southerly, then main beach at point lookout is probably the only place to kite. it is a great break, but be warned, it picks up more swell than anywhere in these parts and if you dump your **** in the drink you will be swept onto point lookout gnarly headland while the diners in the headland surfclub sip on their chardonnays and watch you die!!!
if you find someone with a boat then my man you should should shove your gear in it and leave from amity and head west for 1k into the bay where you will find 'kite island' which works in any direction and is always bathed in glorious sunshine.
best of luck, ian

Thanks greenleader - you've saved me a heap of trouble figuring it all out. Here's hoping for good northerlies for that week. With all that good news I might auction a kidney so I can afford to stay a few extra days there.

no wuzzas fishy,
oh, and on the southside of amity if the wind is south to southwest you can walk to the wallum pools for some short-run flat flat water action and if you like fresh prawns, oysters or fish. drive a couple a hundred yards past the general store at amity to where you see a house with signage and a coldroom out the back.
fresh as fresh and cheap.
ask to see the shark hooks off the drumlines and you will scratch your head how something can straighten a footlong piece of stainless steel 1cm thick.
but they're only after the migrating whale calves so i'm told
as with anywhere here no surfer or kiter is worried.
enjoy

Yep Greenleader's right on the wind. I used to stay there at least once a month at one stage, back then you could do almost anything.... i remember you could drive on any beach. We drive from cylinder all the way to amity, we used to tie a real long skirope to the car then surf the little waves all the way along. Then they got all restrictive, they brought in 4x4 permits & camping permits cuz there were to many tourists (it ruined it big time). surfwise i reckon Frenchmans 'most of the time' has the biggest swells due to the direction the beach faces, but often isn't a good break. Cylinder is always playfull, when its big it goes off, but the currents can be quite strong. Main beach is often good. ive surfed there when theres been shark feeding frenzies from schools of bait fish..... we just walked down the beach 200m no probs.

North Straddie I love the place. Great for surfing and kiteing. I also went up for a mates wedding the last time i went and did not take my kite gear I got lots of waves surfing and watched a few guys out in the afternoon at cylinders doing the business on kites. The best way to enjoy the island is to hire a 4x4 at Brisbane and go accross on the ferry. Not that expensive but will open up so much more of the island for you to play on. We got a Hilux twin cab from a place near the Brisbane airport and a couple of months after returning the car sent them photos of an airbourne Hilux on Straddie
Some nice lakes up their for relaxing in and most of the locals are frendly and will give you advise on where to go. Exploring is certainly the best way to go with an adventure around every corner. Surfing at frenchmans in the morning usually means you have to share the waves with dolphins Although their are lots of rumors about sharks i believe the hype far outways the truth. Good way of keeping the kooks out of the water.

Sukluded places, hot weather and great scenery. Enjoy. Im jealous
