I thought (hoped more like it) that people in this country had progressed from "convict" mentality. Guess I was wrong, there are a lot of intolerant people in this country who just don't get it.

International embarrassment.

not intolerant, get to know the full story first.
would you let a big gang of lebanese guys abuse your gf and her friends while you were out, say kiting at the beach? i don't think so, thats whats been going on down there. fair enough they took action but just a shame they got too pissed and didnt carry out their actions too well.

Hosko are you dreaming?

Next you'll be telling me that all Aussie guys behave perfectly toward women of all races.

What a crock. Did you see the text message that got everyone down there? That was about one thing - Violent Racism.

Wake up dude.

I won't post on this topic again either. It's way too heavy for a kiting forum.

Look, this i think has been along time coming, i dont think either nationality (even though we are meant to be australians) has acted very well. In my experience certain groups have not been very tolerant to the Australian way of life, and now the **** is hitting the fan, in Melb it was the greeks, turks, Italians Vs the Skips at school, then when i played in bands it was the punks, metal heads Vs the clubbers and rave heads, when i windsurfed it was the surfers Vs the windsurfers..etc etc etc always people bitching at each other Ahhhhhhh Well I have no idea how the Croc Dundee Australians and the Wog boy Australians can get along with each other? I personally dont care where your from, if ya a good person then your alright with me. hirschausen i dont think its the convict mentality, yes its intolerant people from all ethnic backgrounds, not just one, problem we now have is that each is retaliating back and forth. Will this esculate to the degree it has in other countries? Remeber its just a bit of Bifo at this point, in other parts of the world they are killing each other over the same **** on a regular basis. I for one will support anyway to help calm this down and will continue to live in my fantasy land where everyone gets along.

My friend's son was in a nightclub about three weeks ago (before all this media malarky started) in Cronulla. He was in a group with two guys and five girls, all having a good time, all friends, all good.
Then some people of middle eastern appearance started hassling the free girls, wouldn't leave them alone, even when asked to.

So the group left, the harassers followed, as they were going through a mall finally my friend's son asked the guys following to leave them alone, as the group were just going home.

He woke up in hospital and must stay there for three weeks with bruising of the brain.

The biggest problem as I see it is that adolescents think that violence or being aggressive (towards either men or women) makes you a man. What happened to the good old days of initiation ceremonies, cutting you with flints, and rubbing ashes into the wounds? That's when men were MEN!!

Your typical 'Aussie bloke' is no angel. The highest sexual assault rates occur in rural NSW (20 x that of Sydney), where the immigrant population is next to zero.

I know that some Lebanese have behaved in a disgraceful fashion, such as the incident with the lifeguards. However, this doesn't justify 5000 screaming yobbos going around bashing up anyone looking vaguely foreign.

That was a national disgrace.

"malarky" - I love that word - the right word for this situation.

From Bill Hogsten: “What is the history of malarky or malarkey?”

[A] It is originally American slang, meaning humbug, foolishness or nonsense. In the early days it was variously spelt, not just in the ways you give but also as malaky or mullarkey. Nobody is sure where it comes from: it just appears out of the blue in the 1920s. Some say it derives from the Irish word mullachan for a strongly built boy, hence a ruffian. My personal theory, based on one of the early spellings, is that it comes from the Irish surname Mullarkey, presumably a person of that name, in the same way that—for example—hooligan does. But who, or when, or where, I’ve no idea.

Doesnt help when the media tend to sensationalise the ethnic gang problems around the capitol cities.I mean u cant go a week without one of these stories being on a current affair or today tonight on how these so called ethnic gangs are ruling one neighbourhood or another. Not that i agree with It, but it was only a matter of time before something like happened. but i put alot of the blame fairly and squarely at the feet of the main street media.Live and let live there are more important things in life.

send them out in the dessert let them fight it out that way anyone who wants to be involved will be and leave the inocent people alone.

public opinion is changing though......in 10 yrs this event may be considered as a good thing. especially when u consider the huge influx of ppl not just from the middle east but south east asia. i'm not a racist bigot but the opinions of the australian public are certainly changing towards being less racially tolerant in the wake of terrorist activities etc.
anyway i know half of you are gonna abuse me now but i don't give a rats. just think what it'll be like in 50-100 yrs when the indonesians have taken over australia because they have outgrown their country. biggest muslim population few hundred km's from our northern coast, it worries me a bit to be honest.

i don't endorse the violence though that wasnt necessary and yeah did make us look bad but some of th ideas have merit.

John Howard and Co had kooked their lines, and the impetuous nubes launched half-pumped, the forecast squall blew in, and there was a lofting of tragic proportions... mothers are left to cry.

Now as the sail flaps torn and battered in the surf, we are left each to wonder "What can I do to prevent this tragedy happening to me?"

What in deed?

one point... as parents we have a lot to answer for ! this should be taught at home... I know my parents did... IMO, social pressure to be like the jones's requires both parents out to work these day's. My question to you is this ? Who's looking after your children ?.

I'm 32 and my mom was home for my sisters and I untill we were almost finished high school so was my wife's mom. Ok our children (2 x girls) are under 4yrs old and my wife will not go out to work untill she & I feel they have learnt enough about the world to beable to conduct them selves in an appropriate manner. I know some families simply have to have both parents out working, however ask your self this, if you culled your living expenses (all the sheit you dont need, materialist gear within reason) does your other half realy need to work ?

I believe in equal opertunites, however I'm also a little of a traditionalist and believe a mothers influence is golden with children at home...

oOnly one part of the problem however it is part of the problem IMO !

Me thinks nothing has changed throughout history. There has always been violence and struggles to control turf. And there always will be.
Zero tolerance should be introducted an inforced like it is in a lot of other countries. Take the Dubai as just one example. This country has alot of different nationalities living and working in the same emirate. Non emiraties can now get citizenship if they have been a resident for a min of 20 years and they are found eligible by a special committee. Prior to that if you misbehave and the offence is serious enough , eg: Had been involved in a fight or had stolen something. The standard punishment is a couple of months in jail followed by deportation. No questions asked, no appeals. And if is even more serious a few hundred lashes whilst your in jail for good measure.
And that is exactly why they have a low crime rate in their country.

Why have I been rambling on about another countries justice, its simply because I think we have become too soft and lenient. Our justice system (if you call it that) favours the criminal and the wealthty.
And certain undesirables have taken advantage of our weak system and continue to rip the guts out of it. Well I for one feel it cannot continue to go on for ever and eventually the pendulum will shift back again.

There is no way I condone the actions of the mob at Cronulla.
IMO that was a yobbo minority taking advantage of & influencing a group of frustrated but otherwise rational & law abiding citizens. People concerned about the level of lawlessness they see increasingly obvious in their society. People concerned for themselves, their safety and their lifestyle.
By international standards the Ocker Aussie is a pretty layback easy going law-abider. Sure the yobbo minority is there - always will be. But NO society is a lawful society without laws and without the law-keepers out there to keep everything in check. No-one, aussie or otherwise, has the right to behave unlawfully. No-one (in their right mind) will ignore the law if the sanctions are there & they know they will not 'get away with it'.
Our current laws do adequately reflect our expectations of acceptable behaviour. The frustration exposed through the Cronulla rampage is simply evidence that our law-keepers are not sufficiently aware or empowered to cater to the shifting % of society which is openly willing to break those rules.
Australia has a police force which, it seems, is lagging behind in its powers & numbers to maintain the cultural standards "Australians" have long known & expect. It should not take an incident like last weekend to highlight this point. It is not the job of Joe Citizen to control the behaviour of those around him. That is the job of the law makers & law keepers. I just hope that the unfortunate incident incites action to correct the problem rather than inciting more of the same.

The issue was originally more a 'gang' issue rather than a 'racial' one. The media have made a circus from it and contributed to the public outrage. Now the idiots participating are all involved for different reasons: turf wars, brotherhood, gang bangin, sheer enjoyment of trashing people's possessions, anti-authoritarian morals (big with Australians), a sense of belonging and unfortunately for a minor few: racism..

The authorities knew Sunday night's event were coming. They did little to control it. My question is.. why? Not excusable.

Once you have public outrage, you can do very little to remove it.

LOL, so I'm being put in the same boat as Hitler huh? Where did I ever mention I was a racsist, redneck? Sorry man go back to watching survivor and aussie idol.

I spent 27 of my 31 years living in Panania. Before you judge, wake up and have a real good look. Know why I was only foolish enough to spend 27 of those years there?

Because I wasn't going to raise kid's where you have to live in fear of your daughter's being raped because of racial hate! But yet they say they ain't racsist, we are.

Worked in a timber yard in western Sydney labouring with lebs that hate the place (Australia) and don't want to be here. Probably never even been to lebanon, but want to go back.

What team cause's the most problems in the NRL? No prize for getting this 1 right! The Bulldog's and the 1's stiring the **** are not there to watch the game. Just like the 1's that head out to Cronulla are not there for a surf. I would like to see that, PRICELESS!

Who shot up Lebkemba police station? Sorry no prizes!

Who stabbed Edward Lee? Sorry no prizes!

Why did the police avoid the street where Eddie Lee was stabbed when they knew dam well the leb's were selling drug's to everyone and anyone that would go down there?

Got kid's Andy?

Ever lived in western Sydney Andy?

So what the **** is stopping them from going to Lebanon? sure they could go if they wanted to or to other places if they hate australia so much (it can't be a money issue, they all have hotted up cars, weapons and drugs) they choose to stay here and try to turn this country into a nightmare... so are you sure they really hate the country itself, or just the fact of the people living here and running the country...

Hear on the news this morning "rumours" that cars and busses full of 'ethnic' people are comming to sydney from melbourne to make trouble, if this is the case as far as I am concerned the airforce should get in some target practise while they're in transit. And I would say the same if the report was of australians comming here from interstate to add to the issue...

Have a merry christmas and a happy new year - is anyone foolish enough to think these people are going to let that happen in sydney this year...

"Them and Us" mentality, what a great way to live. It's all about being scared of something different.

Windsurfer : "If those kiters want to come and use OUR windsurfing spots, then THEY should learn to windsurf. That's the way it's always been. Maybe THEY should just go somewhere else."

KiteSurfer : "I can't believe THOSE windsurfers expect US to windsurf. WE are Kitesurfers and should not be expected to windsurf with THEM."

Might be better if everyone realised WE're all Wind sports enthusiasts.

Accept the differences, might make you happier and a better person.

Great analogy...except you seem to miss the whole point

(To continue with your windsports theme )

"THEY" hate the beach, don't kite, don't windsurf and don't appear to want to learn either.

It's all very well to say we gotta see things from both sides and learn to accept each other, and learn from each other, but it's painfully obvious that this isn't working for a small minority, who seem to resent the people and the country they have chosen to live in. Its not our fault if a certain culture refuses to, or is unable to assimilate, is it?

Don't get confused between a small minority and an entire culture. Every culture has a few f**kwits within it, the trick is not to tar the entire culture with the same brush based on the actions of a few.

e.g. Some kiters have been known to jump and land on windsurfers or other beach goers. Are all kiters idiots? Should kiting therefore be banned on all beaches?

An email floating around which sums my views up:

"Australia- The Right to Leave
Our Country - YOU Have the right - the right to leave !
After Sydney not wanting to offend other cultures by putting up Xmas
lights.
After hearing that the State of South Australia changed its opinion
and let a Muslim woman have her picture on her driver's license with
her face covered.
This prompted this editorial written by an Australian citizen. Published
in an Australian newspaper.

Quote:
IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It !
I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending
some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on
Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority
of Australians.
However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically
correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that
our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor
do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life
by coming to Australia.
However, there are a few things that those who have recently come
to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand.
This idea of Australia being a multicultural community has served
only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Australians,
we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our
own lifestyle.
This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials
and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.

We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese,
Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become
part
of our society, Learn the language!
"In God We Trust" is our National Motto. This is not some Christian,
right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian
men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation,
and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate
to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you,
then I suggest you
consider another part of the world as your new home, Because
God is part of our culture.
If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like " A Fair
Go", then you should seriously consider a move to another
part of this planet.
We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, And we
really don't care how you did things where you came from.
This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow
you every opportunity to enjoy all this.
But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag,
Our Pledge, Our National Motto, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage
you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom,

"THE RIGHT TO LEAVE"

If you aren't happy here then f#@* off! We didn't force you to
come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU
accepted. Pretty easy really, when you think about it.

I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends (and enemies) it
will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all
try, please."
