My wife after getting up and going for a few times, and doing very well, was lofted by a gust, and dropped straight down into the shallow water.

After spending almost 7 hours at Royal Perth in the Emergency room, a few good doses of morphine, and her X-Rays (which I saw, and is absolutly unreal) she has broken her leg. However it is not a simple break where they reset you, cast you up, and send you home. Shes staying there overnite, (probably 2 days) and is having a cat scan tomorrow morning, and will have surgery in the next day or two. She'll have a screw in her knee, and will be away from work for the 8-10 weeks. I'm really saddened by this accident.

Its totally amazing how well she brought her kite down for me to catch with her in the water with a broken leg. You can actually see the bump of the snapped off bone on the side of her knee. She did totall awesome.

Watch out in that shallow water. I know I will be sticking to the Ocean in the future.

A special thanks to Ed for rolling up her kite while I carried her to shore, and got her situated. We'll see you 'round my friend.

Stay Safe out there.

Sorry to hear about your accident. When did this happen?

Agree, when the tide goes out it gets very shallow in close to shore. Beginners should be out a little to avoid this.

Hope she is back again soon.

I'm very sorry to hear about the accident. I believe accidents involving riders coming off in shallow water and breaking feet or leg bones, is the most common type of kitesurfing accident. And it can really have some dire consequences.

Is there any advice your wife can offer to others so that they can learn from her expeience? What could or should have been done so this didn't happen?

I do hope she's not put off the sport and will come back to it when she's back on her feet.
Thanks
Graeme

If she comes back, it won't be til next season. She has 6 pins, and a metal plate in her left knee/tibia now.

She has been in the hospital since it happened last Saturday. Should be out soon.

As far as advice goes, she doesn't recommened learning in shallow water, for obvious reasons. Don't underestimate the consistency of the wind, or the power of the kite.

Anything can happen, at any time.

Thanks for your sympathy.
