It's a complex issue. Lois Theroux did a special on canned hunts in South Africa, well worth a watch. Some of the key points were that for every animal hunted on these canned hunt farms, a certain number had to be bred and released into the wild.
There is currently a major fundraiser to save the rhino happening in the US and elsewhere. It's one of those big bucks raffles, like $1000 per ticket or something. The prize? To shoot a rare rhino.


Distasteful in the extreme, and yet when you think about it with cold logic, it's really not that bad. These animals die in the wild every day, that's how all the carnivores eat. 1 carefully selected kill can provide US $500,000 - 1,000,000 for conservation of the rest. If they select an older, dominant male with a number of rivals, his herd will be opened to a younger, more vigourous male who ought to impregnate more females. Who else will happily donate that kinda money, but rich white US 'hunters' ?
