all this talk of seabreezes is making me batty...

About 6 weeks ago scored a back injury (not kiting related-- makes it harder to stomach). A bulging disc compressing a few nerves leading down my leg... Haven't kited since then.

Don't see the specialist for another few weeks, but looks like I'll miss at least half the Qld summer.

Has anyone else struggled with injuries that kept you out of kiting? Especially back related??--> how was it when you got back into kiting?
How did you feed your addiction?

Meanwhile i twiddle my thumbs, read seabreeze and watch every internet kiting video i can find... when im not bashing my head for exams that is.

Did my ribs landboarding & was out of action for about a month.

Got my toe skewered by a piece of dirty wood through wetsuit boots & all - got infected, out of action for about a week.

Split open my heel & got 6 stitches missing a step at a friends house - out of action for about 3 weeks (totally sober too!)

But the worst of all was getting chicken pox in my early thirties...man that is a serious bummer - like the worst hangover of your life for 2 weeks straight.

Sorry to hear about the injury,

I had a bulging disk in my neck, it gave me allot of griff when I body dragged and after a big session. One morning after about four months of putting up with it I woke up in extreme pain down my left arm.
I had a MRI done and it showed up that the Disk had burst, when it was bulging out before it burst it was crushing the nerve to my left arm. The Doctor gave me three options, leave it, fuse three disks together or possible get a prothesis.
I took the first option to see how it would go, after about two weeks the pain had settled down and within three weeks I was back on the water and going hard again, that was over 18 months ago. The Doctor said after the disk burst it shrivels up and the pressure is removed from the nerve. All I suffer now is a mild tingling down my left arm every now and then.

For the addiction I went and filmed my mates while they were riding.

Bertram,

Sorry to hear about your greif, better getting that fixed right.

Not much of a consolation but you could try filming and taking photo's of your local crew if you've got the kit, not doing it yourself but you can get some joy out of being down the beach and still being involved.

If it then works you can then have a video barby night with the local rif raf and review it all

hope you get better soon

Hey Bertram,

I once tried to lift too big a rock and ruptured some cartilege between my disks in my lower back....well right leg goes off, sweat, big pain etc....6 month munching pain killers and supine.

End of story is key hole surgery to suck out the broken bits sitting on nerve. I was scarred ****less thought I would never do a rotation again....imagine, no more sports! Anyhow, I spoke to my Dr. friends who said it does heal....I didn't believe it, but my back is very good after 10 years. It is a VERY slow recovery...but it does heal....good luck.

slow recovery... not what i wanted to hear.

yeah i did mine in the gym being lazy with technique. lost the use of my left calf for couple of weeks (the disc compresses the nerve), but its coming back which is a good sign.

the doc sort of hinted at surgery when he took a look at my scans then gave me the number of a good neurosurgeon... not a great sign.

so no kiting for a while... bugger. just made a ply board as well havent even tried it out yet.
oh well apparently theres heaps of hot chicks at pilates, which is where i get to hang out the next couple months...

enjoy the water-

You are very young and being part of the "scene" as Alby says, will be your speediest recovery

I tore my R pectoral [big chest muscle] clean away from my arm surfing in at Lakeys 2 months ago. The thing was I wasn't even kiting and the surf was the smallest it had been for a week. All I did was fall off my surfboard trying to make a barrel and being low tide I stretched my arm out and it ruptured on impact with the water surface.

The muscle was sagging down and the arm was totally useless, so I got it fixed as soon as I got back to perth. 3 bio-absorble bone anchors screwed into the bone securing the tendon against it with super strong threads apparently. Was told stay off the water for 9 months but John Geyer has been praying for me [I leant him my surfboard on that condition] and I think its working! and its looking good for Christmas!

God it sucks being injured but at least I can wait around while everyone sorts out the C vs Bow arguments! Also the gardening is starting to come together and my family know who I am now.

I had major back surgery at 21 (15 odd years ago) fused from S1 to L4 (lower back). Don't believe the hype - if you do your exercises (keep those abs strong and hammies stretched) and look after it you will be back in action sooner than you think.

As for kiting, absence makes the heart grow fonder. I missed all of last season after a shoulder reconstruction (kiting accident), just got back on the water and loving it.

Hey Hammer, I had the same problem 6 months ago. Had the problem disc removed and 2 vertebra fused with a titamium cage, back on the water in 3 weeks.
No pain, wouldn't even know it was done. Beats having those pins and needles down my arm.

Hi I haven been hanging out all winter to pick up the learning curve after cracking upwind on my last session.
Bugger me if I havent been struck down by tendonitis (RSI computer work).
This is ****y as to put up with but knowing kiteboarding would absolutely be the worst thing you could do just twists the knife that bit more...
"Patience grasshopper patience" I keep telling myself... Oh well I was just about to buy another board so at least that's not sitting in the corner teasing me!

Good luck wih the back prob bud
