Hey all,

I have just started to kite on waves, and went out for the second time yesterday on my shortboard (but I have been surfing since I was 15 or so).

I can catch the wave no problem, but they were breaking quite quick yesterday. If I wanted to keep up with the wave, then I would be going faster than my kite, and I would lose all the slack on the lines. This means I would have to veer off away from the wind direction (and thus away from the wave direction), and miss the best part of the wave

I suppose there is no way around this if the wave is breaking faster than the wind is going?? It was exceptionally light yesterday, as I was struggling on my 12 with a surfboard.

Cheers,
Tom

I find this an annoying problem sometimes, but it can be often solved with a down loopy thing.
Instead of bringing the kite up and over the window, steer it towards the water and keep steering, and go straight through the middle of the window.

This problem shows it self more in wave riding but when ever you riding around 12-15 knots you can feel it a little bit.
1-Loop your 12m kite
2-dive your kite from the power zone to the 45 degree (10:00) and dive it back again to the power zone and this time to 2:00 (smiley shape).
Unlike freestyle that you hold your bar from the center you need to hold the edges of your bar.

Keep your kite moving all the time
Try and make your kite ride the wave and follow it
ie the kite is always a step ahead
Think that makes sense.

Are you on the beach whilst your kite is riding the wave? Do you need a really big board for your kite to ride?

Nah.. good advice I will be noting too. Sorry - I couldn't resist doing 'A Rellie' Cheers.

Kiteloop, or downloop on each or every other turn (either top or bottom) as you go down the line.

I like downlooping the kite as I do a top turn, the added power as you hit the lip is huge.

My worst wipeout was after watching the lines go slack in heavy surf. Kite went down and I ended up in a close out section with no power. Ended up falling in on top of my lines as a the wave started to drag my kite. Just waiting for the amputation now. By sheer miracle, the hook knife dangling off my harness managed to cut one of the lines while I was getting tumbled. Kite popped, filled with water, ripped luff, roughly $500 worth of repairs. But hey - I'm still here......

Same thing happened to me, easily far worse than any surfing wipeout. Rolling in your lines is very dangerous.

I only take on solid waves now if the wind is very strong, hence fast moving kite with lines less likely to go slack and fall from the sky. Light winds, big (slow) kite and big surf is not a good combination , its so much more dangerous than conventional surfing. If the kite goes down, and the wave rolls you in your lines, the lines will then be pulled tight as the wave catches upto and pushes the kite. If a line has gone around your neck it could well be fatal. I pulled a loop of line from around my leg a split second before it became tight.

If the kite does go down in big surf, Fully release the kite (no safety leash) and swim away from the lines as fast as possible. The kite won't fly away as it waterlogged, pick it up on the beach.

the most important thing when kiting in the waves, is to fully release the kite when you cant relauch before the breaking waves. i have seen many kite ripped to shreds, but on the same impact my comes out fine from releasing.

DONT BE LAZY, RELEASE.

If its a bow, depower it that will mean it flies closer to the edge of the wind window, sitting more upwind.

Don't know if I read it correctly.

Its not just about the kite .You can also use the wave to your advantage .It sounds like your probably kiting in light onshore winds ,dont just run straight downwind with the wave straight at the kite .looping will help but its also important to get back at the wave and create some tension in your lines .It can be a bit daunting initially with the wave crashing and closing out right on your arse (particularly if they are big waves and light wind )

try and pick a wave thats breaking right or left and not just a big close out ,If its one of these then bail out the back of it before you go racing off down the face with nowhere to go except straight at your kite .Sometimes you might get all excited and race off the peak before you've had a chance to figure out what its actually doing .Be patient and pick the right wave .if you have to bail there will be plenty more to catch
