I headed for a night session at the Cairns wakeboard park last night. It's a small business who has set up a few jumps, some rails etc on a small lake. It's been there for a few years. Usually they have some music blasting and everyone's having a good time trying out new tricks and just playing around. Last night however I noticed there was no music. Apparently the local Health and Safety team has audited the site and concluded that music makes it unsafe.

To all my fellow Australian's... can we please stop over regulating every little aspect of our society in the name of safety. Over-regulation makes the place BORING!!! There is a time and a place for Health and Safety however that does not extend to music at my local wakeboard park!!

thats totally fkd up.......... so the law allows you to listen to music whilst driving a car or a truck but not whilst at the cable park.

That wasn't a rant. This is a rant.
Everytime I return to Australia, be it from England, Europe, Asia, mid east wherever, the first thing that hits me is the rules. We have way too many rules and laws and safety fears, that nowadays it's almost illegal to walk across a street without wearing HI VIS clothing.

But let me rant on

Bike helmets
In Amsterdam, anywhere in Holland 95% of the people get around on bikes. Without helmets. Now, before all you negative people jump on board and say " oh it's only cyclists so where could the harm be", it is also a major city with a heap of infrastructure so therefore it is also filled with, trucks, lorrys, taxis etc.
And nobody wears a helmet ?. Why ? A bike helmet detracts you from your natural senses i:e hearing, and peripheral vision, if you were to look at the stats you'd see that our law enforced, helmet wearing cyclists are much more prone to accidents as opposed to those who don't wear them.
But in Australia' if you get on a bicycle, without a helmet. You are committing a crime !
I could accept this for under 16 kiddies who haven't quite got their sh-t together yet, but I'm failing to understand why a cop was trying to do me for helmet laws three days ago as I was doing a lap of Lake Monger on my pushy.

But in Amsterdam(and in Holland in general) people are used to pushbikes, they are the default transportation device. Here the proper way to get around is a 4w drive or a pimped ute and if u pass a guy on a push bike, honk, abuse or throw a bottle(that have actually happened to me)

What kind of helmets are you referring to? A normal bike helmet does not affect any of that.

I'm not sure if I support the regulation cause from my point of view it actually stops people form using their bikes here. I never seen as many nice empty bike lanes as in Perth.


If I would rant about laws here I would do it about the regulations that only exist to keep useless paper-turners employed by the state. Such as the Skippers ticket(a monkey can acquire it), the working with children check(the regulation got so many loopholes that Marc Dutroux could voulonteer at a kindergarten). Or maybe the fact that you risk a $250 ticket for having a beer at the beach...

Good point Lets ban music altogether, it's just too risky. Whilst on the subject of helmets, someone should also invent a helmet we can wear everywhere. I wear one when cycling to work, another on the building site, another kiteboarding, I even wear another one to wear to 'protect' me from the sun.

Apparently my Darth helmet isn't compliant with Australian Standards......

I doubt a pink Darth Vader helmet is compliant anywhere, except at a mega nerd convention.

Umm- Your correct it does have heaps of infrastructure. It even has these things called bike paths. They are dedicated just for bikes and mopeds and NO trucks. lorrys, taxis etc are allowed on them.

I was happy to cruise around Amsterdam on a bike in a dedicated bike lane averaging max 20km/h with no helmet and also no trucks, lorrys, taxis etc. However sharing the Pacific Highway with trucks, lorrys, taxis doing over 60km/h I think ill pass - little own not wear a helmet.

But hey- if that is what you want to do, fine by me, but I just hope for your sake that natural selection wont take its course.

It is because of compulsory voting. Those that dont work, those that are on benefits, those that do work but are brain washed unionist/socialists and those that want to run others lives that vote for left leaning parties including the Labor Party. They have themselves to blame because the Labour Party philosophically wants to intervene with laws and then run corrupt closed shops with their bully boys.

If all the poor souls that have been forced to wear Hi Vis new a little history and literature they would understand the symbolic nature of their prison uniform that they wear.

First to VB man - Yeah, I see a lot of rules here, but also, I see a serious lack of enforcement of said rules. So, in the spirit of social rebellion, I suggest you guys try ignoring some of the lame council by laws and regulations you see around the place - if you get a fine don't pay it - you'll find many by laws contravene existing state and federal laws.

Second - to kitelooper - I'm one of those "prisoners" who is "forced to wear" hi vis for my job, on various mine sites around the world. The nice thing about robust health and safety regulation is that you or your family don't have to worry about whether you'll make it home in one piece at the end of the day - if that means wearing hi vis and sitting down with my work mates to discuss the safe and proper way to do things then I'll do it. I was chatting to an old timer yesterday and he said a mine he worked on in Tassie had 7 deaths a year back in the day. The problem wasn't so much people were dying from their own unsafe practices, but that people who had nothing to do with the mistake bore the brunt and ended up being sent home in a bucket.

Finally - to Kym1 - talk about a first world problem... oh no the cable park doesn't have loud music anymore - when you're out on the water do you care about the music? Does it REALLY add so much to the experience you can't ride without it? I bet you'd be the first to make a claim if you came a cropper and the operator couldn't hear your screams to stop the cable over the well bangin' Dubstep!

My kids went to a birthday today, they could not do this or do that - there was even a trampoline there which they could not play on. All they could do is games like pass the parcel and the mom was apologetic for the types of foods she provided.

Kids can't even enjoy a birthday nowadays because people are sh!t scared of getting sued, what does that say about society.

Doctors have their hands tied in diagnosing and treating patients because they can get screwed ( these are an immigrated doctors own words not mine).

I'm thinking the next time my kids have a birthday the invited kids parents will have to sign a waiver, so their kids can have some fun.

I wear a helmet kiting because I have made an educated decision too, not because I had to by means of force feeding and brain washing.

The best example I see of this is the people getting killed crossing train lines. People are blaming the government for not building underpasses (at every train crossing which is just not feasible). How about blaming the idiots for crossing the line when a train was coming? How about blaming the idiots for playing their iPods at full volume and crossing without looking? Sure, they may have died but it doesn't take away their responsibility. Instead their families look for answer by trying to get the government to pay for things they should be teaching their own kids, like how to safely cross a train line and look before crossing.

It bugs the crap out of me because we're building a society to cater for morons instead of letting people take the blame for making their mistakes. Sure its traumatic for train drivers but it's really not that hard, if you cross a train line when a train is coming and you don't look, you're going to get killed. No, the government is not to blame because even if they build an underpass, people will still cross the lines when they're in a hurry. We're not talking about 10 year olds getting killed who don't know any better, we're talking about people who are 18+.

And yet, every week or two we still hear of people getting killed by trains and every time it happens, we hear people crying for and underpass instead of trying to educate their kids on basics in life.
