I'm “noo” to the sport this being my first full season (wind permitting).

Three lessons at the end of last season, a refresher at the start of this season and a dozen times out by myself.

After reading a couple of “heated forums” ie Pinerooted & Beginners at Safety Bay I'd like someone to please explain to me the need to kite in flat water.

I've driven past “The Pond” a couple of times and wouldn't personally kite there because it looks too busy and I don't want the hassle of trying to stay out peoples way while trying to get in some valuable time.

Personally I just want to get out there and not have to worry about anyone else and do my own thing. I'm hoping to spend some time the other side where the kite school is during my time off over Christmas.

Why do “the Pros” kite at the Pond?

Jonopark, I'm still trying to understand in regard to “Pinerooted” what you mean. I don't understand where you are in relation to the people turning.

Are the kiters heading out then turning back to shore in front of you?

Can someone “PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!!”

You're right that the Pond can be very busy, can get quite tricky to get into the circuit and if you do stack it can create all sorts of Hassles.

That being said, there is no problem with kiting on the other side of the spit, a bit more wave and chop action but plenty of room to play.

Personally I mostly kite around the corner at Penguin Island, nowhere near as busy as the pond and with only a small amount of wave action. You can also play in the bigger swell around the Islands to change it up a bit. People are pretty friendly there, I've had a few tow ins when I've had gear failures

what about.... dont jump when there are people downwind of you?

How are people supposed to know when someone is gonna start jumping? it is the jumper that needs to plan his jump correctly. it is in no way the person downwinds fault if the jumper can't jump because there is someone downwind of him.

i would also add that if you can't tell from watching a kiters kite and edging that he is about to boost, you should probably be kiting well away from areas where the majority of guys are doing unhooked moves and large jumps etc anyways.

Can't understand what all this fuss is about, that penguin island side seems great and there is space to burn....kiting circuits are not my cup of tea and if people relatively new to the sport are kindly shown that they can experience freedom and fun without the dramas, they would probably choose option b) as well.

hope things work out down that way for the freestyle enthusiasts though.

ps. i know some consultants who have been trying to get catherine point groyne extended... if we could get them to increase the scope by 100m or so we would have a new alternative to the pond and woodies imo - will see what i can do!

mate it's obvious that i was talking about you're 'friendly' post that you send to me. but hey I don't blame you for not noticing. maybe you are just a little special. At least we are all gods children hey?
