Hi everyone

This is from second hand information, however it seems that people are using the point past the fence, to launch at pelican point. I also witnessed this on Friday arvo while i was there, someone was launching out on the point.

Please take notice of the sign on the fence which clearly states that the beach area beyond the fence should not be used to rig and launch kites. This area is a CALM reserve, and they are very serious about keeping this area free of kites as much as possible.

So far, the people at CALM have been really cool, and are really keen to get involved in our community for mutual benefit, so please respect the fact that they have asked for us not to use this area.

Next time you are thinking of heading out to the point to launch, please read the sign, it's pretty clear.

Cheers.

The CALM reserve at Peli Point plays a vital role for some special migratory birds. These birds travel about 9000km each year to Peli Point from Northern Asia.

They feed and roost on the point from October to April each year at Peli Point. This time is important for them as they need to rest and eat to develop enough reserves to fly back to Nortern Asia around April.

There is an international agreement between all countries to protect migratory birds and their roosting grounds. Obviously, because if one country fails to protect these birds then they may die out world wide.

A few kitesurfers helped to conduct a survey for CALM to see if kitesurfers were affecting the birds migration. The results found that it was ok to kite on the water around the point, but not ok to walk and launch on the land as this is where the birds feed and rest.

I certainly respected the area a lot more after hearing this.

Cheers

Apparently the survey found the long haul birds see the kites as a locator beacon to easily find their way back to the point, and as such CALM actually encouraged ppl to kitesurf at Peli.

Do your bit and remind people not to launch from there if you see them.
