Just a quick note of (BIG!) thanks to the two guys who helped me out on Sunday arvo when a line on my Warrior decided that staying in one piece was far less exciting than separating into two parts of equal length. I didn't catch either of your names but I'm sure you know who you are - one of you chased me down while kiting, the other ran along the beach to try and assist. The running gent also recovered my board and saved it from floating out to who-knows-where...
Much appreciation to you both, and if you own up I'll gladly shout a couple of rounds at the local.

Also to the yachties who sailed out and dragged the wounded sleeping bag back to the beach for me another big thanks.

Kite is ok. Kite owner is a little sore, but will live to fly another day

Safe kiting.

Hey Mate,

no worries!

It looked pretty ugly watching your kite looping and you getting dragged down wind. Wasn't sure whether your safety was jammed so you couldn't release so I was ready to drop my kite and try and assist before you got dragged past the spit and perhaps eventually into Mounts Bay Road!

Figured out afterwards that if you break a line on a foil, dropping the bar does not totally de-power the kite, hence the reason why you were hanging on as otherwise you would lose your kite.

Must admit I wasn't sure whether the guys on the yacht were going to bring the kite back to you, but take it you met them at their Yacht Club.

Hey quixand please give me a call or email me - I'd like more info on exactly happened to see if we can prevent this sort of incident from happening again.

I personally have been flying Warriors the last three years and have never had a line failure like the one you describe. The only line failures I am aware of could have been prevented - primarily by doing pre-flight checks and replacing inexpensive worn components before they fail.

When I had a line snapping 10 days ago on my Warrior 9.3 it was soooo preventable :
  • The line was fuzzy
  • The pulley it went thru was stuck
It doesn't get any more obvious unless you get a blinking red light on the bar. Replacing the lot cost me $10 for the line and $16 for the pulley. Most stupid.

It might be a problem that there's a lot of old Flysurfers around now as they are so tough and last so long that they outlive their lines. On inflatables you get a new bar and lines everynow and then. With the Flysurfer it is part of the kite and no one really thinks about it. I had a look on Airush and Naish bars and (max $250 complete with QR and safety leash) and there is quite some options to completely refurbish the kite.

Cheers,
Steve

Yeah I have to admit that I was a little concerned I wouldnt' get it back either. I did meet them at the Jetty and they handed it over quite happily and checked to make sure everything was ok.

The kite, lines and pulleys are (were?) basically brand new, and were checked thoroughly before launching. The annoying thing is that these were replacements for my old lines, which were getting dodgy. I have a feeling there may have been unseen damage to the new lines which created a weak spot, hence the snap.

Ian - have sent an email to your address with more details. Look forward to hearing from you.
