Hi!

I'm a girl coming all the way from freezing England to sample the Aussi waters end of March. I hear Western Australia is where is wind is at during that time, so planning to fly into Perth. Mainly want to go kiteboarding. Please can people tell me where is good to go near Perth, who to contact, any info on accomodation, where to stay, if there are any organised clinics etc.Will be for 3 weeks.

Thanks.

Steph

March may not be your best bet.

My subjective view of usual kiting conditions in Perth thru the year
(10= world class 1 = cr*p)

Jan = 10 (in S/SW afternoon seabreeze)
Feb = 10 ( " )
Mar = 8 ( " )
Apr = 5 (better get yourself a surf ski and paddle instead)
May = 4 (except Frontal NWesterlies which can be 8 - 10)
Jun = 4 ( " )
Jul = 4 ( " )
Aug = 4 ( " )
Sep = 5 ( " )
Oct = 6 ( " )
Nov = 8 (in S/SW afternoon seabreeze)
Dec = 9 ( " )

Hi Steph,

Andris is right, you're coming just a bit too late for the good winds. By April the seabreezes start getting really light, like 10-15 knots which isn't much fun. Pretty much the strongest seabreeze we'll get in April/May is 13-18 knots, otherwise the only wind we'll get will be from the first of the winter fronts, meaning gusty and generally Westerly (you can only safely kite a Westerly in Perth in one spot and that's Woodman Point). However it's not all bad news cos so far this season has been very unpredictable: it started 3 months late and the breezes on average have been particularly strong, so who knows, we might get good winds through April & May! If you head out of Perth up to Geraldton (450km) and as far North as Exmouth (about 1200km) you're more likely to get decent 15-20 knot + breezes in April/May.

All manner of backpackers, hotels, caravan parks, short term flat rental. What's your budget? By clinics I presume you mean instruction, check in with some of the local instructors regards lessons and fees:

Darren Marshall: 0407 012 220

All the best,
Jess

God - I wish Andris was wrong with those stats, but, he's pretty spot on. why cant there be more seabreeze throughout the year?!

U just start taking them for granted, and then they go for the season... i still remember all the waiting during last winter...

from what i've seen the further north you go - the better it is in later months - but i dunno if thats leading up to summer or away from - can anyone confirm?

HI guys,
Its my 1st season and I have only got a 10m LEI so far (shoulda bought 12m I know) but I am looking to buy a cheap 2nd hander for the lower winds later this year.
How does a 14/15m sound for these times? I am 80kgs and riding a 142cm baord that isn't the greatest planer of all time (not so bad though).
Also are the winds gustier or flukier around these times or are they low but constant?

Hey Get Funky,

The winds tend to go more strong offshore in the morning and become frontal, from the NW, strong and squally as winter progresses. Lots of rain too! Its usually pretty gusty and squalls come and go with monotonous regularity, need to keep a close eye on the weather and pick your days carefully!

Winter bites for kiteboarding and the amount of good relieable days is so few that I usually put my gear away and go surfing instead, except for on those awesome super strong days with big swell at Cottesloe!

Good winds and Peace

if u r going to a 2 kite quiver i'd definitely get a 14 to go with the 10m u already have.

the seabreeze from the end of feb to mid april will start to get lighter, less frequent and come in later but when it is blowing should still be steady. by mid april it's pretty much all over. on the up side u can expect some reasonable early morning easterlies thru march. tomorrow morning for example

edit: hey i've cracked the ton

Hey thanks guys,
I am trying to save some $$$ now and you have helped me narrow the field a bit more.
Oh also, when you say the morning easterlies are you meaning on the river? I am yet to venture there as it is my 1st season so the ocean has appealed for less obstacles. Where on the river is a good SAFE-ish spot for easterlies???
This site is mint mate!!! Almost as good as a winnie blue in the morning (eeeyyyeeewww)
Cheers,
