I'm bored so I have looked at every website for all Perth based kitesurfing shops, dealers and kitesurfing schools and a bizare thing I found, they all claim to be the first in Perth to pioneer and promote the sport. Can anyone tell me who was officially the first person to launch a kite here and make waves????
I got back from a world trip in 1998 and was surfing out at brighton around Sept/Oct when this thing went past me going downwind and I asked myself "what the f@#* is he doing" he was toesiding with a foil kite I think and looking very awkward but moving along ok. I had never seen a kite before and at the time didn't think it would take off, but look at it now!
So who started it

The guy you saw was probably Ian Young, I saw him once too and went straight to Peli Point for some lessons. From what I know he was one of the originals, if not the first close to it. I think he started with the kooky kite ski set up. He's still mad for foils, directionals and toe side, old school yes but definatly a pioneer in Australia. Dunno about the rest.

Well zac i can say there was a bloke named KIM he made home made windsurfing gear, and spun a lot of crew when he launched this UFO thing on the west coast, he struggled up wind on a very small directional board. But i know his enthusiasm introduced it to quite a few doods explaining the consept and giving them a go up Geraldton way,and he was one of the first to do a hell down winder to Margret River from kiosk, from memory he ended up rescued on the box. MAKES A GOOD GUITAR,too

I bought the World's first commercial purpose-built kite surfing system into Australia - the KiteSki, from Cory Roeseler of Hood River, the Gorge, USA (he is now with Gaastra). That was in 1997, 6 months before Wipika had their first kite on the market.

There were many guys into traction kiting all over Australia well before me, mainly using buggies, but I have heard of a few using non-relaunchable kites and skim boards, Mals, etc - they would have been the FIRST kite surfers in Oz.

Cheers,
Ian Young
