I Have just taught a mate to kite and he is doing well. Lives in newcastle during the week but goes back to port on the weekends and will be there for the winter. Anyone any advice on where to kite in which directions and flat water spots? Appreciate it, cheers.

Hi Pheebobafat,

Flatwater spots are few in Port. You can kite in the river mouth about 500m up the river in a NE'er and it's pretty good, but ideally you need to launch from Pelican Island (across from the town green) so you need a boat or a kayak to get over there. It's best on a high tide as sandbars pop up when it's low right in the middle of the spot. Southerlies are apparently very gusty and not good so I don't know whether this spot will be any good in winter. It's my first season too, if your friend needs kite buddies he can PM me.

Middle Rock rocks...There is a little flat water on the inside....Waves out the back.
Lighthouse on an East is straight on shore and you can kite along the beach there.
Big hill up near point plomber and all around there is also good on any wind direction.
The whole coast is awesome . I can't see why you'd bother with the river.

Yep am a local. I'm in the same boat as your friend, have just learnt so keen to keep the ball rolling over winter and make the most of next season! There's a small crew who kite up here regularly but they are all fairly experienced and stick to the wave spots, not so many beginners. I've sent you a PM.
