Had the misfortune of fracturing two ribs on friday .
Had just got a new board and was keen to but it to the test .But 10 minute into the christening i came down funny from a jump and landed on my side and throught F#$% that hurts .
But the painkillers have kicked in nicely now and the fact that there is no wind is keeping me sane .
So was wondering does anybody know how long i will be off the water . I realise this is a strange thing to ask but the doc was little to no help .One person said two weeks the other six .Don't want to push it and find i have done more damage.
thanks

3-6 weeks is the "usual", but if you go out before it is mended and do the same spot again it takes ages to heal properly, if it ever does at all.

Wearing an impact vest helps while healing, and is not altogther such a bad idea to wear one all the time. I saw a cabrinah one which looked really solid, buch better that the wakeboarding ones.

cracked mine just over 3 weeks ago. was able to kite in the recent wave comp after only 2 weeks as 1. the wind was reasonably light and 2. no jumping required.

i'm still ok as long as i don't jump. am thinking of going back to a seat harness as this is the second time i've done my ribs in

Broke 2 of mine last year, it took 6 weeks, if they are really broken then there is nothing you can do to speed recovery, they might be just bruised, if they were really broken you cant get out of bed in less than 3 mins, they fricken kill. Because you often have your arms extended it will put strain on your ribs so give them enuff time to heal nayurally otherwise they will still hurt years later, mine still do now, 12 months on. If you think about the incident it was probably your elbow going into your ribs, not the impact of the crash, 90% of ribs on water are broken this way.

Good luck with the recovery dude, just keep fit by walking and take it easy.

Broke the bottom floating rib about 10 years ago when some idiot knocked the end of the weight when I was doing a heavy bench press. Took over 6 months to heal and I still have a dent in it - I agree with Bowski if it is really broken, then you won't even be thinking about getting on the water for 6 weeks, so you might be lucky and it is just bruised. When it breaks, it sounds like a dry branch snapping.

Simple test - try doing some push ups - if it hurts, then don't go out, next time you might break them and then you will be waiting to next spring before getting out. Get well soon
