Does anyone have any tips regarding this topic?

I mostly fly 13m C which i never had issues relaunching from the water with leading edge down. Simply pulling on one back line moves the kite slightly to one side of the downind position and starts lifting one side up at which point i just launch it sideways - i.e into the wind, rather than straight up which would be a lot more risky and dangerous.

That trick didn't work on the 17m C after the wind suddenly picked up and i crashed the kite after a failed trick and getting overpowered (i weight 77k). So given it's big size, whilst in the water the kite kept pulling me towards the beach at a steady pace, and after several attempts and manouvering of the lines and bar, i had to quick release. I wonder if it's simply a result of non adequate wind conditions for the given kite size... or possibly lack of skills

Don't know what kite you actually have, but you might need to use the "old" method of swimming as fast as you can towards your kite so that it flips, then hold your bar straight towards the kite so that it then goes to one side. When you're really overpowered, you should first hold your hands up above your head to make the lines really tight, then suddenly, as fast as possible fling forward and swim like mad - that should get the kite flipped so it's not leading edge down.

or if its a 5 line C, just pull on the 5th line until the kite is on its back. if you are overpowered the kite should be easier to relaunch.

I used to have the same problem on my old 15.5m but mainly in lighter iffy wind.

Spend around $30-50 to get a 5th line attachment sewn in and around $30-50 for a new 5th line (same dyneeda or whatever you existing lines are) and you will never regret it. I did and the old beast is much more fun. Relaunching is a piece of proverbial, the bonus is the whole set-up is safer too.

Make sure you get a yoke/leader line on the kites attachment point with several knots, to play with getting the right length. When flying, you want the right length to be just a little slack on an old 4 line kite - not taught so as to pull the LE forward/depower. A ring at the bar end will act as a stopper/leash attachment.

Ava search on SB for a converting to 5th line topic etc.

I've already converted it to a 5 line... and eventually released the bar so that it turns upside down on the 5th line, after which i was worried about any further line tangles and just returned to the beach and rigged up a smaller kite.

But i haven't tried relaunching from that position before (i.e. hanging on the 5th). Would you just get to the bar, and and pull it back towards yourself to relanuch? It gets a bit confusing because the kite is upside down, and the control is reversed... i'm guessing you'd also have to steer it to one side... but then again, wouldn't that keep kite stuck to the water ...

I hate to ask lizard, but did you take lessons when learning????? This should have been covered by your instructor if you did.

But, to your question, when it lays back and the leading edge is facing you (so it looks like a 'U' from your perspective) pull on one end of the bar (turning the kite). this causes one of the wingtips to act as a sail and the kite will travel across the wind, keep the bar pulled like this and the kite will get far enough to the edge of the window until it begins to fill with wind and the kite will launch back into the air.

Relaunching like this, the kite is at the edge of the window close to the neutral zone, so there isn't a great deal of power (compared with trying to relaunch from the 'wrong' position, aka. directly downwind of you or close to).

Hope this helps,
D

Meredith, I took lessons, but started kiting before covering the relaunch of big kites in strong winds... I only used my 17m twice the whole summer... so didn't bother getting a lesson for relaunching it. As i said i have no issues relaunching smaller kites. With this one i was just cautios and didn't wanna risk too much on the day, hence why i posted the question here.

Thanks for the advice.

Best thing is to not release the bar (unless of course you are in strife) but it is possible to recover from just the 5th. You do have to be very careful not to get any lines tangled around you or your gear, especially your bar. Keep tension on the 5th (too avoid powering up) whilst making damn sure everything is clean and clear before letting the 5th SLOWLY out again. I think you should look for a detailed explanation on a webby. Suggestions anyone?? Maybe even a call to your former instructor might clear things up.

I thought the whole 5th line thing would be complicated until I read a couple of webbies (Hmmm... Best and Naish I think) and tried it out finally. Whala!! Easy as pie-iss.

Good luck.

You have to have an old C kite on its back to relaunch otherwise there is no way it will go to the edge of the window. So leading edge facing you and wingtips in the air. You can achieve this by pulling the 5th line in but still holding on to the bar.

Point one end of the bar towards the kite - in other words tension on one of the back lines. The kite should now move to the edge of the window. Slowly let the 5th out when the kite is near the edge of the window. It should move to a position as though someone is launching the kite for you then relaunch as usual.

I have to do this with the new Atom 08! Gives a kiter some true skills though. I am running a tally of how many newbies I see yanking either side to try and flip it. They just have not grasped the knowledge of rolling the kite unto its back and teasing it to the window and skyward! 101 in my book there are guys who have never learned!

Solution 1: "Don't crash it"

Solution 2: Get a bow..... ;-)

Solution 3: Get one of those fridge door sized boards and use it with a smaller kite...
