Hi all,

Dos anyone know if you can remove of the 5th line on the naish torch (2010 ) to fly?
Also how does it fly with out it, does the kite need a 5th line?

Thanks,

I don't have a torch, so i don't really know if it's the same for them, but i broke the 5th line on my ozone sport a couple of months ago and it couldn't hold it's shape properley, real wobbly and couldn't depower it much... I imagine that would be worse on a c shape kite. Still maybe someone with a torch has a better idea

I don't think it would perform very well. Plus would make relaunching a bit tougher as you'd have to swim toward the kite to get it onto it's back. Why do you want to remove it? Assume you're kiting in waves and are worries about it getting tangled?

I wouldn't remove it either, cos if you do, good luck relaunching

what a load of crap. C kites relaunch fine on 4 lines. what do you think everyone used to do before 5 lines kites came out?

the only difference really is if you ride boots it takes a couple of seconds more to swim the kite on its back coz you can't kick.

Leave the poor gen y, and people with soft issues alone stamp. The sport has got harder than when you learnt, apparently.

I had an 07 torch which flew OK without the 5th line, but was just a bit bumpier. Had to also be very careful to make sure it was inflated enough (i.e - very). Was much nicer with the 5th though. Don't know if this helps you at all given that you are asking about a 2010 kite, (and we are still in 2009)....future shock! Woah!

duno bout new torches but 07 - 09 all were dependant on the support of the 5th line, my 10m flew like a bag of dicks without it, lost a fair bit of low end, looked like a soggy taco and didnt behave itself... youd find especially in stronger winds when a gust hits it it will fold up.. but i duno bout 2010

Lack of wind fuelling a bit of kite-rage there stamp?

I own both 4 line and 5 line C kites and guess what - you are absolutely right.... it's possible to relaunch both! I personally find using the 5th line easier though. Each to his own I guess.

haha, yeah stamp, spit the dummy son, lol
I'd rather pull on the 5th than d1ck around swimming towards the kite.

AndyG - don't do it mate, it's there for a reason, unless your desperate to

i'm not spitting the dummy, it just sounded like you were saying a C is hard to relaunch without a 5th line.

i usually ride a 5 line setup myself unless i'm in big surf

If you actually know how to use a 4line kite they aren't hard to relaunch, and you don't need to swim at all. Just pull in 2m or so of front line, once it flips and goes to the side then pull in the opposite back line. Or you can pull both back lines and reverse relaunch. Or if you have a new C kite just pull in a single back line and alot of them will launch this way now as well.

To answer the first question, your Torch is going to fly like sh!t on 4 lines, it was built to fly on 5 and be supported by the 5th line, you might as well buy a seagull.
Or if you really want a C kite buy a fuel, or similar.

Does the 5th line on a torch really support the canopy because I it really loose not tight at all.
I am not desperate to do it, but did fly my friends 2010 fuels ,4 line and it seams so simple easy and reminded me of the good old days 4 lines easy and cool.
After looking at taking it of, can not be bothered.
Thanks for all your info.

I'd say yes - even the 05/06 Torches and Ravens like a bit of 5th line tension and more tension required on 07 onwards - same as HiFi, Vegas and to a more extreme case Vapors and Rebels. The Torch 5th line will be loose from the chicken loop up to the Y where there's a stopper that holds the 5th line tension. (So you don't have to independently adjust depower and 5th line)

If you want a 4-line C why not late Fuel, Hadlow, Best Team or there's quite a few compact bridle SLE's around that would suit wave riding as well as freestyle?

dont forget generators also fly good 4lines..

yer even with a loose 5th u still get the support, my kites are similar in that it needs the 5th tension to work good, ive flown it slack and it still works but once u take it off the kite just doesnt fly as good anymore.

Having recently acquired 08/09 Torches I can tell you the 5th makes a difference.

It is less responsive in the turns and I actually found putting it on the middle knot gave the best overall performance. I can relaunch my Torch in about 2-3 seconds (suicide) with a little pull on the shift line.

Anyway you have been told but the best way to find out is to spend 5 minutes experimenting for yourself and let us know how you go. It always interests me the random questions that get asked on here really... Most of them should be directed to an Seabreeze FAQ page.
