OK, I am not a total gumby or maybe I am. Can anyone explain/simplify the following right of way rule...

When two riders are on opposite tacks, the port tack rider shall alter course and/or kite position in order to keep clear of the starboard tack rider who should maintain the same course and speed.

Question: how do I know if I am on a port (left) tack or starboard (right) tack ????

If I cannot understand this, what hope have the newbies got. Or maybe I have below average IQ.........

wow thats funny question, but its good that you asked if you don't understand, basicly...

Starboard = Right
Port = Left

So, (riding healside or 'normally') if your riding on a port tack your left arm will be in front. If your on a starboard tack your right arm will be leading.

Hi Ratlizard,

Forget all that starboard and port tack crap.
It doesn't really relate to kiting, it's a yachting thing.
Kitesurfers never fuss with it .

Just remember that the upwind guy flys his kite up high, and the downwind guy flys his kite down low.
That makes it possible to pass.

If both kiters are on a collision course, just eyeball each other and make a judgement call ,
as to who is what and where ??

If that plan fails, both kiters can carve a gybe at the very last moment and rail-spray each other.
That's fun.

Regards,
slave.

yep, not everyone uses these rules all the time, common sense normally prevails and the good guys get out the way of crazy out of control beginners. The rules are definately worth knowing and sticking to where possible but most kiters are pretty loose with them.

I've got to agree the port/starboard thing doesnt always apply
as dont may other "rules" but common sense prevails & works most of the time
One thing I reckon should be an absolute constant is the kiter leaving the beach should always have ROW and be given a fair space to get going & sorted. This should over-ride the port tack; up or downwind; or any other 'rule'.
IMO

AND (while im at it)
IMO - ALL land & launch areas should be 'No Go' areas for session kiting. My local has adopted this as a basic guideline which all comers are encouraged to adhere to. It was perhaps more necessary here than elsewhere but I reckon it would make sense everywhere. Global Kiting Rule no. 1 - that way everyone would know it
What do you reckon

Hey Slave

Yep agree with ya! It did seem a bit nautical the explanation. Common sense does prevail 99% of the time, kite up high upwind, kite down low down wind etc etc.

Puppet

I do think most locals at local spots respect the "no session kiting" in launch and landing areas. Just need to get the word out there to anyone who is still learning and the visiting crew....

Did anyone see how busy Woodies was on Sunday????? This was what got me thinking about the right of way rules. Think I am going to start a shark rumour to thin down the numbers..... hmmm post it on a european kite chat board.

WARNING: Great whites frequent the area due to industrial run off from local Abottior....

By the time I've figured out which hand is in front and is that's port or starboard, we'll be tangled.

Yeah, yeah, I know the old 'There's no port Left' thing.

I read a few weeks ago a post about the rider heading off the beach has right of way over the rider approaching the beach. Is there anything in that? Seems alot simpler and gets rid of all this port starboard tack ****e which does seem very yachty.

So who has row kiter, or newbe with kite straight up in n zone at pelli point Must be 2-4 of them each time i go out.
Is it just me or is it getting harder to take off because of all the obsticals. Re learners 20-30 mtrs off land in near on shore winds ???

Feel much better now
