Kitesurfing is banned from Sydney Harbour. There were 3 or 4 there yesterday who thought it was a good idea
Think again - especially the big bald bloke.

It is simply unsafe in that location with other craft and swimmers.

Sydney harbour is full of incompetent skippers on sailcraft of all sizes that are dangerous to other vessels. Just catch a Manly ferry to circular quay and see how many near misses the ferry has ! ...If they ban kites ban all dumbass sailcraft.

Richoa,
1. go to the RMS website and inform yourself.
www.rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime/safety-rules/other-boating/sailboarding-kitesurfing.html
Sydney Harbour is a no-go zone for kiteboarding and many areas within the harbour are restricted when sailboarding.
2. No one told me to F off.

What is yr gripe exactly with the big bald guy?

I just don't like rule Nazi's especially rules that should not be, and that give power to rule Nazi's.

The rule itself doesn't particularly impact me other than how it is delivered and derived for what purpose.
a kite can navigate and stop quicker than most vessels that would be in that harbor.

It's been banned in Sydney harbour since mid 2000's at least. Whether or not you think it's a ****ty rule, not following it makes it more likely that there are larger negative consequences on the sport, and more bans...

I was at rose bay beach before midday (swimming with my dog) and didnt see any kiters. The beach was pretty full though! Can't imagine where you'd launch a kite. Let alone once you get out there's boats everywhere and sea planes taking off and landing. Crap place to kite, good on them for banning it there.

Seaplanes in Rose bay near swimmers...W.T.F..they should be banned from there and sent to a more safe unused waterway like Kurnell...haha or ban swimmers..

Back in the day, when NSW maritime as they were known then, approached NSWKBA which was the state association of AKSA (now KA and KANSW). They contacted us due to the actions of the large bald guy, who had a little bit of hair back then and a similar amount of aggro attitude, and his look at me buddies. Bald guy lives in Point Piper so thinks he has local rights and can kite wherever he wants disregarding rules and the safety of others. He also kites at Bondi, which is also a location where kiting has been banned. (second most visited tourist location in Australia, always crowded even in winter) One of his mates was on the infamous Bondi rescue show getting dragged up the concrete wall at the back of the beach. Big baldie has been knocked senseless by a well known ironman personal trainer for harassing surfers and giving lip.
He had been in trouble with Maritime prior to kiting for windsurfing in the "no go" zones and regularly told Maritime officers to feck off. Besides that bit of background it was decided after several meetings that kites would be banned, due to incidents with kiters (those crew) needing to be rescued, and flying too close to the seaplane zone. KSWKBA had to support the ban because we knew that a downed kite with 27M of lines was a massive safety issue for the person attached to it and any passing motor boat or yacht. Sydney harbour is an incredibly busy waterway, large commercial craft, with limited ability to see or avoid a downed kiter, and zillions of other boat owners with widely varying sobriety and navigational skills.
Its also a crap place to kite and is incredibly gusty with no safe downwind margin for error.

There was a thread on here about this time 2/3 years ago from big baldies mate, he was lofted and knocked out, and thought he had been drugged, it was a pretty strange story, some people never learn.

Its funny how a gazillion people get rescued when swimming or boating every year and no one ever suggests that's a reason either should be banned because they're too dangerous. And if the boat has a problem moving, clearly the boat has the problem and should by logic be banned! I get that not following the rules makes kiters look bad (cos its the LAW!) but fact is banning kites is completely arbitrary. Basically the rules get made by people who dont kite and for whom its all too complicated to change their usual systems and way of thinking. The rest is just finding other ways to make it sound sensible.

Be specific.. mentioning a bald kiter is like mentioning a fat kiter, half the kiting population is thinking "did I kite Rose Bay"?

It's banned cause most kiters are farkwits.
Imagine the carnage if 3/4 of the tools kiting the bay decided to kite the harbour.
rules are there for those who need to follow them. Those who need to follw rules are generally dangers to everyone else first and themselves second.

If the big bald guy was riding a buzz kite; (and jumping between 4-6m) it could be some kind of marketing conspiracy!

Hi all

Big bald guy and his crew were out again on Sunday, 25 March. If any one knows these guys they need to be told to stop. One incident (minor or serious) can lead to a review/ban of kiting in other areas we are currently allowed to kite and we definitely don't need that!!!
