Kiteboarders are trying out a new way of gliding over the water and grabbing waves. It is a great way to develop board skills while crossing-training in a solid workout offshore. It is new but also very old, brought about by the surf riders in the Pacific long ago. It has recently exploded in Hawaii, again, and now is moving outward to other parts of the globe.

Standup paddleboarding, standup surfing, "Beach-Boy" Style surfing, Hui O He'e Nalu, it goes by many names but what is it? I recently put that question to John Bendon of Maui, HI. John is the son of Jim Bendon, the man who introduced me to kitesurfing in the summer of 1998 in the BVI.

Getting in sooner, riding longer, surfing when no one else can, getting an intense workout is gay?

"These boards feel like longboards however they react a bit slower and there are all the dynamics involving the paddle. Things like carving, pivoting turns and related footwork. If you're on a small wave and it's about to give up the ghost just start paddling to try to renew your ride. "

"This can even bum normal surfers out at a crowded lineup. Spots that were usually "ruled" by longboarders such as Kanaha are now feeling a bit of competition from the standup guys. Folks may recall that shortboarders can grumble about longboarders grabbing the waves and now the long boarders have some competition. This may not be a good thing. "

In essence, gay gay gay! Why do regular surfers need more competition from Massive POS that have the manuveurability (cbf spelling) of a truck. The same thing is allready seen with things like goat boats.

This is great stuff Ricki, however, Peter Lynn, the pioneer of cayak/catamaran/boat kiting had try it years ago.
I tryied myself too, to use a PL 3m waterfoil with a surfsky, however I ditch the ideea as unsafe and cumbersome.
Any way, good luck to the guys trying it again, maybe they will come with a good ideea.
