Any local Safety Bay Kite Surfers willing to direct/teach/assist/give some info to a complete rookie. I am residing in Rockingham and very much interested in Kite Surfing but do not know where to start except for the obvious, the sea. LOL! Any recommendations ?

Take it easy on the bloke, obviouslly looking into the sport for the first time, thankfully he had the sense to ask around before buying something off ebay and causing more strife.

TEN... welcome to kitesurfing. There are a lot of issues with newcommers to the sport getting into the sport the wrong way, not learning about all the safety aspects of the sport and giving kitesurfing a bad name, in Safety bay this has recently become more apparent.

If you want to get into kitesurfing, take the time and spend the money on getting proper instruction from an IKO qualified instructor. It is money well spent and the stress and time it will save you makes every cent worth while.

there are schools in Rockingham. a good place to start looking for info is

kiteboardingwa.org.au/

when it comes to buying your first equipment, the newer, high depowers kites are worth their weigh in gold. do a search for previous post on seabreeze about that and speak to your instructor about what they might suggest.

The best time for kitesurfing in Perth will be drawing to a close by about march, so keep that in mind and have fun, be safe and help keep the beaches open to us all!

I smell a troll, but just in case your legitimate. Speak with both schools ones at Safety Bay and the other is Shoalwater, that way you can go and look at the area and equipment used, plus ask about what teaching techniques you will receive as they are largely different trust me.

I`m interested in the difference in the teaching techniques of the two schools?? Is one better than the other? Interested cause I`m always recommending both schools to people and don`t want to recommend someone to a bunch of cowboys. (wich I`m sure neither is). And how would TEN know wich is the better when he, she hasn`t got a clue about the sport?
And yes TEN, lessons with a qualified instructor is the right way to go.

OK, I'll try and remain unbias with this.

When you require a service for anything in life you would normally shop around ask questions to try and get info to understand more about what your spending your hard earnt cash on. I for one jumped in and didn't look around and ended up extremely disappointed with the lesson I recieved, I then went on and just taught myself. which I look back and realise was so stupid and always now recommend lessons.

What I mean about teaching techniques is that certain schools are maximising your time and money when others are wasting it. For starters I would rather start the lesson by walking 30 seconds to the teaching area rather than 10 mins. But the technique comment is more in regards to the use of helmets. Not only safer but also have direct communication with the student, the learning curve is much greater early, resulting in reduced amount of lessons. Experience is also important, some people can be instructors but can't even proficiently retrieve their own board in the water. So you need to ask the questions and come to your own conclusions, some businesses are run on passion others are just entrepreneurs.

I personally don't think there will be a school operating out of Safety Bay next season if things continue the way they are currently anyway.

That's great you went down to the meeting on KiteJam day phrase, I believe the agreement which is yet to be made public was a good outcome. I would have been there but had to sleep after night shift. At the end of the day I'm not fussed with Safety Bay to much, I kite for enjoyment I don't want to be down the beach shouting at teuro's all day. I'll just keep hitting the other spots where only a few of us go. Bring on winter.
