Got 7 stitches in my left heel after a fin slice on Friday arvo. Second time lucky for me as I got 6 stitches in the sole of my right foot the day after the Rotto race.

Anyway ...necessity breeds invention.

How about this for an idea...A surfboard fin totally normal except that small triangular piece of rubber around the edge of the fin to provide a protection from fin slash.

The bit of rubber might only be about 1 mm thick and be moulded around the fibre glass fin both on leading and trailing edge. Have seen this sort of thing on kids toys and other safety equipment.

The rubber could be quite hard and on this basis I cant see ti interfering with fin performance too much.

Would it, could it work, am I still feeling the effects of the anaesthetic ????

Hit or ****, you tell me.

Obviously it is mould to be integral and not interfere with fin shape.

They've already been invented, dont think they're that popular although probably a good idea if your travelling.

Always wondered though why average Joe surfer needs razor edges on their fins!

I've had 6 stitches in the sole of my foot from a fin chop when surfing.

Girl at school cut her leg open (near her thigh) and was in fairly serious trouble (blood loss). Needed internal stitches etc.

Fairly common accident I guess...

I don't know if a rubber edge would help heaps? The force of the water will still be pushing a fairly small area of contact into your body. Interesting if it works well though.

I recon it is just one of those things that happens if you're a little unlucky each now and again...haha.

You dont actually want sharp edges at all, sharp bits create cavitation.
Its mainly the tip of the fin that is the dangerous bit. The leeding edge of a fin, no matter how blunt will still cut you. Even the pro-tech ones will if you are hit with enough force.

As part of boards coaching would take sheet of wet&dry to Surf Life saving carnivals - nippers.
Had to check for sharp fin(s) and sand round - Board could still take U out but not by being diced!!

Point being rounded edge fins works fine - As new fins are not too sharp - just being dragged over sand which tends to wear to a fine edge!! Having said that my Sector 60 fins need sanding they come fairly sharp from new - wonder what the wind-surfing boys recommend.

Cheers

I've always wondered if the rubber tips on those fin would give a little more flex and could actually have some great advantages in small waves for popping the tail out.

Great idea, but who's going to buy a fin to protect other people in the lineup??

unless your prone to running yourself over i can't see it taking off.

BTW: on this topic did anyone see BONDI RESCUE last night.

some backpacker got mowed down by a mal knob head. what a d-bag..

Just a thought on ANZAC day....

In kite surf comps Wal's pussy rubber fins ( I think a great brand name - any kite comp can use that if they wish )would probably get you scored below & rightly so - unhooked, unstrapped, switch, and maybe even the strapped riders- as you would be the safest rider in the surf - so have an advantage ... judges would probably deduct 2-3 points per ride.

Additional at your local kite spot kiters using this new WAL PUSSY FIN in the surf - kiters may end up in the natural surfing pecking order below, boggie board riders, sup riders( my kidz call them zombies), really old people ocean swimming ( actually this is pretty red bull crazy sharky pass-time) & little kidz on inflatable yellow sea horses wearing yarhoo swim vests.

Kiting seems to be going to the blow up seahorses in 2012.

P.S yes I'm now using the cork in the fork idea from above - works well at dinner, now all family very safe eating.

God will get you Johnno 'Danger" Keys...

Nobody wants to hear this but I think we will be forced to used softboards to kite on Perth beaches pretty soon (as I understand is the rule at some Sydney beaches ??? - Bondi).

This thought use to piss me off, except I then started thinking about how crappy Perth surf is..... and I sliced my foot up twice .......and then a certain J Keys started picking on me.......(just cos I beat him in the Rotto race.....comprehensively).

Took the stitches out yesterday morning then went and had a boogie at the WAKSA end of season party. Party was great except for this weird south African guy kept trying to touch me, I think his name was Will or William, watch out for him guys.

Those Proteck fin guys must be genius's to come up with such a progressive and innovative idea.

hey Wal269,
I'm new to kiting, but cutting my feet up in surfing has been a pain in the foot.
Most times its the tip or the trailing edge that catches on a turn around to take off or a blow out floater or anything where the board starts spinning near your feet. I've cut 'em on sharp rails and tails too either way it comes down to keeping the pointy sharp bits to a minimum.
The Doggie is right just sand them down, you can only sand em so much at those points but the cuts from blunt fins are more likely to end up as a pressure bash/skin breakage than a cut & be heaps less work later than the ones from sharp edges, which can get surprisingly deep for something that felt like a little bump....
At the normal surfing speeds of your average local wave warrior,(paddle surfing) I don't think you'll notice the missing .5 mm of fin glass.
I would imagine it's much the same for kite surfing but others here can tell you better about that than me as I know the speed and jump factor will definitely amplify situations
