I have recently been kiting with a helmet on, as well as a lifejacket (PFD type 1), a retractible leg rope, sunglasses, wetsuit and try to keep my mobile phone on me at all times in a waterproof bag.

I must say that I feel a lot safer, everyone should be taking this approach, before someone gets killed. I'm sure that everyone will have to agree with me in this major issue reguarding the safety and future of our lives.

Also having this on me, I am more confident to try new sick tricks, like the other day i nailed a dead man. everyone was watching, felt so good.

my pfd has the new gps emergency location system in it approved by waterways. i find that it gives me added confidence during board offs when everyone is watching.

Retractable leg rope. What`s that for, so you can take the dog for a swim? Seriously, that`s all a retractable leash is good for.
I`m not sure what a wet suite has to do with safety? Even in winter I don`t always use mine. Oh, you guys get alot of stingers that side. Arrhh that wouldn`t bother me, hard as nails I am.

Before someone gets killed? There has been a lot of deaths in kiteboarding, most people know this and take it as an acceptible risk. If you need all of this extra gear to feel safe, maby your kiteboarding skills arent as good as they should be and with more practise your confidence will rise. Safety starts before you go to the beach checking your gear, when your setting up, making sure your safety works safe launching and landing. Allways kitting with other people and making sure you dont put others at risk.

Personally I feel uncomfortable wearing to much gear, i do wear a helmet on the slider but apart from that only a wetty when cold and my harness has a knife. Knowing my safetys work and practicing relaunch and self rescue plus knowing my limitations and never ridding alone i feel safe.

What happens on a big crash when your board leash tangles around your kite lines and then you end up with a arm or a leg stuck, lines have also got caught on all the extra clips on the life jacket and the kite is looping out of controll? Do you quickly pull out the phone in a dry moment and cal 000? if you can reach it.

What happened to you to make you take all of this extra gear did you have a kite mare and if so would any of the gear you now carry have made a difference?

have to agree with Waxman and Vader. Especially in regards to using a board leash for safety....

hope this 'focker' isn't another troll. if not, nice last name.

I'm in Perth, I wear a helmet and a PFD and a Reel Leash
If I didn't have my Reel Leash I wouldn't need the PFD and Helmet but I'm so happy with the whole package as I don't have to retrieve my board each time I fall.
I look like a total dork though.

In case of mobile I think it is safe to have it just in case you got in trouble in the water but at the same time mobiles are the most annoying inventions which makes us available for people who we are running away from.

Exactly, which is why I don't wear a leash, PFD, helmet, or wetsuit, but then I'm probably not in too much danger sitting at home on the couch - kiteboarding is WAYYY to dangerous to actually participate in

the safety gear mentioned above is quite important in our waters...
when a croc comes for you the first step is to try and bash it on the head with your helmet, if this fails feed it the pfd (the bigger the better), and see if it chokes... if it's still comin your in a spot of bother, but theres always the leggie to wrap around it's neck. if that works then phone your mates so they can get a photo of you ridin a croc... if not they can pick up your bits in the waterproof bag...
