Pics here http://picasaweb.google.com/kitepower09/SandyPt

Not a lot of kitesurfing pics because yours truly spent a lot of time on the water. We had wind all 4 days we were there!
Friday was S around 8-10 knots so we got the land kites and buggies out on the main beach, Col Packer, can now say he is a landkiter too, he picked up buggying with 8 and 10M foils like a duck takes to water.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday the wind was SE to E and ranged between 15 and 30 knots, mostly in the 20 to 25 knots range. This has to be the best Flat water conditions I have seen on the East Coast of Oz. Water temp is a cool approx 15/16C, but you don't notice because you are having too much fun speeding and boosting.
On most comparitive runs with the windsurfers, we smoked them, so its easy to see that speed week will be taken over by kites, IMO.

All in all well worth the 13 hr drive, and we will definitely be visiting this area en masse next year, drool over the pics!!

Any speeds to post? What kit did you use?

Curious to hear more.

I logged a couple of 31kn runs on Sunday, not too fast but there was a reasonable amount of traffic and a bit of chop in places too. I really see the potential of the place in a SW though.

I was on a Flexioil Ion2 10.5m and a Flexifoil 130x40 board. I could have done with some more kite as i was not really powered up.

Sam I am really dumb, I had a Garmin GPS in my van all weekend and constantly forgot to put it on, doh!

On the Saturday afternoon, in mid low tide, on the inner channel closest to the eastern shore where you drive onto the sand spit, I was hitting some serious speed, the water flying off my board was landing a good 30 feet behind me. I was lying almost parallel to the water, 12M SB3, 132 x 39 Underground FLX, 40mm fins, and from my previous experience in going fast in buggies and on the water I was doing high 30's to 40+ knots.
The rooster tails thrown off my board were noticed by a lot of people, but I was a long way downwind from all the other sailboarders and in a different chanel.

When Matt Woods and Col were out they were having a lot of runs against the windsurfers, and always seemed to be edging in front, often by a long way.

No doubt there are fast windsurfers, but I can see the potential for much faster speeds from the kiters, with a lot less gear to lug around, and at the end of the run you can throw a huge, seriously high boost!!

Depower kites allow a rider to go out well powered up and still have enough depower to handle the increase in power due to apparent wind buildup, now its time to refine some boards, like Dave Trewern (and others) has been doing!

Great event, absolutely no hassles with the windsurfers, everyone got along fine it seemed to me?

That's dead right, it doesn't matter if your effective or not as long as you look good!

I suggest you look at this Steve, this is what 40 knots looks like:

HA!

good vid Saffer.

Of course now all GPS units have been superseded for speed measurement.
All that is needed is a measuring tape dragging behind to measure spray length [}:)]

No track log to display = nothing to claim.

and you are supposed to take 10 knots off guess's not add 10knots on

You guys dogging Steve for his comments are fuggin' idiots-it was aksed what speeds etc and he answered-so what if he mentioned he was throwing down a fat rooster tail -where's the stoke?

Karve logged a couple of 31kt runs.
we assume logged means he has the track log to prove it.

31kts is average production freeride sailboard gear speed at Sandy point.
to go past this you have to start working on fins and board size etc.

as far as kites go it is not much past this speed that production boards start porpoising and become a handful. It is this becoming a handful feeling that also gives you the feeling of thinking you are going faster.

So for future reference, any claims over 31kts need track log proof or you are just insulting those who really are going past the 40kt barrier.

To be honest most of my runs were too short to really get to full speed. I was kiting upwind of most of the poleys. When I did get a clear window to go for it the wind always lulled, so I never got a chance to log a good clean run as i was having to work the kite. Even so I was pretty much smoking the windsurfers.

I have to agree that 30kn on the water feels pretty damn fast though. I reckon production boards are capable for sub 40kn speeds but the water has to be butter smooth to avoid the board becoming unstable.

when I downloaded the track logs, i initially got really excited as it showed a top speed of 63kn. I then realised I had left the gps recording for the drive home. doh!!!

The guys are calling bull**** because of the speeds he is claiming (high 30's to 40+) you better have more proof than a rooster tail, especially when you consider what doing 40 knots really is.

Greenpat has done some speed runs and I'm sure he can vouch for the fact that anything close to 40 requires more than just a big rooster tail.

I think a certain few would disagree with Steve with whatever he had to say. Some seem to have a personal grudge which comes out in their posts, get over it kiddies!

I think it would take a LOT of speed to create a 30 ft rooster tail !

Go Steve!

Loco is right on this. Steve answered a question, and stated that he was estimating his speed from experience. He wasn't "claiming" it.

Estimating is claiming if you make it that high.

Hey calm down, I was just answering Sams question, and I gave him my best GUESTimate, get over it.
I have been powerkiting for 15+ years, and have logged some serious speeds in buggies, including massive distances, so I have some experience to base my claim on.
I've achieved speeds of 90kph in kite buggies.
I was definitely going faster than Karve. People who really know me know tha I do not kite to be noticed. LOL's!!!!!
Have fun claimers, you were not there so you are just bagging and claiming too!.

Can I claim 36 knots max for yesterday? Maybe I could claim 38 (rounded) but it's not 40, so it's barely on the radar anyway.

The readout on the GPS showed a maximum of 67.6km/h [36.5knots] and the track data showed:

5 bests' average = 65.9km/h [35.58Knots]

Best Speed n°1 = 70.29km/h [37.95Knots] (195.3 meters in 10.0 sec.)
Best Speed n°2 = 65.77km/h [35.51Knots] (127.9 meters in 7.0 sec.)
Best Speed n°3 = 65.77km/h [35.51Knots] (127.9 meters in 7.0 sec.)
Best Speed n°4 = 63.91km/h [34.51Knots] (142.0 meters in 8.0 sec.)
Best Speed n°5 = 63.77km/h [34.43Knots] (141.7 meters in 8.0 sec.)
Best Speed n°6 = 62.67km/h [33.84Knots] (87.0 meters in 5.0 sec.)
Best Speed n°7 = 62.53km/h [33.76Knots] (34.7 meters in 2.0 sec.)
Best Speed n°8 = 62.2km/h [33.59Knots] (103.7 meters in 6.0 sec.)
Best Speed n°9 = 62.01km/h [33.48Knots] (103.3 meters in 6.0 sec.)
Best Speed n°10 = 61.33km/h [33.11Knots] (51.1 meters in 3.0 sec.)

Yes I have posted this in three different threads across seabreeze now but hey, I'm stoked .

Yeah Greenpat, in my book you did 38 knots!
But of course I always exaggerate! LOL's
Nice work, that is serious speed, where are you doing this?

Oh and Saffer I watched that vid, that water is like ocean chop compared to what I was on, those guys have balls to do those speeds on that choopy stuff.
The water I was on was like GLASS, I was on the downwind edge of a sandbar, the water was only 12 inches deep.
The maximum length of my run was much shorter though, and the speeds I got were only bursts of a couple of hundred meters max.

I don't care if it was 35 knots, and it was not 45 knots, but it might have been 41 knots, and it was likely my average was only in the high 20's over both directions.
None of you baggers and claimers were there so STFU, please.

Lots more kites will be there next year.

If you watched the video, you would notice on that video and all the ones where the guys achieve 40's, they are not "lying on the water" but riding upright bearing slightly downwind.

You could only "lie on the water" if it was super flat, and it was not super flat where they were riding in that video so they had to stay quite upright, thats how I have to do it at Towra Pt, in Botany Bay.
But you can lay over more when the water is super flat like GLASS, because there are no ripples that will start an edge losing oscillation (porpoising).
There is no way I was going anywhere near as fast as those guys, but I was still smoking for a 12M kite and a 1.32FLX, and the water was incredibly smooth, it was an amazing experience.
