I have recently moved into Mascot and the nearest beach for kiting that I am aware of is Sans Souci/Brighton Le Sands. Can I just get some local feedback on this kiting beach as I dont know anyone in Sydney? ie.

Is this a good spot for someone new to kiting?
Are there many fresh kiters that Kite at this beach?
Is there easy access to public transport?
What size kite is best suited for the area?

cheers

Mick

Hey qfmike737,

Sans Souci, along Riverside Drive can be good in a Southerly but it is really onshore and can be a problem launching at high tide as there is no beach then.

Mick Moylans point can be empty and fun in a Nor Easter if you want to avoid the crowds at Dolls Point. Same run out tide if not faster, and you can tack up to Dolls. It's no good in a Southerly. However it can be ridden in a Westerly if you are desperate enough (super gusty).

The Northern side of Towra Point between the Outer Towra marker and the Entrance to Quibray Bay is fun in a Nor Easter in the shallows which keeps the chop down (no tidal effect). From there it is an easy work upwind to Kurnell or back to Dolls.

You can only kite Brighton Le Sands South of the Novatel ie no closer to the Airport than the big white hotel. Along the Grande Parade it is very choppy with huge bay chop. The beach is narrow and any problems sees you wash up against the rock wall in a Nor Easter. It does work in a NE, SE, SW, but there is very little beach at high tide and too many fisherman.

The Beach out front of Novatel is OK if there aren't too many peeps on the beach but again the water is choppy and the beach usually crowded in summer with tourists.

You might also try Yarra Bay @ La Perouse in a Westerly or Sou Wester which can be fun or also most of Kurnell is fun in a Nor Easter. The entrance to Quibray Bay is good in a Southerly but make sure you can stay upwind due to next stop being Ramsgate.

Other secret spot which few know about or ride is the leeward side of the sand bar off Pelican Point in the mouth of Wollooware Bay in a southerly. If you go there at mid to low tides you get the smoothest water on the whole bay, I mean buttery smooth, lots of room and no one there with clear winds (no peanut gallery or audience, no crowds!). You need to launch at Sans Souci on a low tide on the sand flats and work upwind to the sand bar. Check it out! It's awesome, but can only withstand about 4 kiters. If you kite there, there'll be room for 3 more of ya mates.

The last spot which everyone frequents and complains about is Dolls Point. It is well known, overcrowded, choppy, overcrowded, filled with learners, overcrowded, has kite eating trees and powerlines and is small and overcrowded with heaps of people there, get the picture????

For surf you can check out Maroubra, (but you better know someone there and get an invite) or Cronulla at the Wanda to Greenhills section of beach in either a Southerly or Nor Easter, both can be gusty. If it's too out-o-control at Cronulla (swell and wind) you can kite Darook Park (look it up on the map). A dodgy launch but fun kiting in a Southerly.

I reckon that probably just about covers it, hope this helps.

Merry Christmas and good winds

Thanks for all the info kitehard!

Im still pretty new so I will need to get a street directory or search some maps and google earth it for awhile to find the different beaches and locations you mentioned. I know there are other areas around but I thought Brighton Le Sands - Dolls Point would be my closest beach to where I live which is Mascot. I dont have my own transport at this stage and I'm going to have to cab it to the nearest beach which means I'll end up having to leave my phone/wallet/keys etc in a bag on the beach while im in the water. I suppose its not like i'd have much money left after a taxi fare anyway!

Im at the kiting stage of being able to go both directions but need more time working on upwind skills because i lose ground a little bit on my goofy foot.

Hey guys,

All of those spots are well known by the locals, there are no secrets! Being the first to kite most of those spots mentioned and having shared them with the original Botany local crew of 2000 and 2001 they are hardly secrets.

To the Johnny-come-lately riders who lay claim to "secret barely ridden spots" ... many others have been there, ridden that, got the T-shirts to prove it, long before you guys picked up kites.

Share the love and the spots! Even after these posts some of those spots will still remain rarely ridden, due to lack of peanut galleries and spectators or being difficult to get to, or being away from the safety of the masses.

Enjoy! Or I'll tell the last few remaining truly secret locations

Speaking of Towra Point. Is there any way to get there by foot? I noticed a sign just past the sharks club, but it seems to state private access?

The water on the North side is clear and shallow for ages.

omg the secret spot of all secret spots - darook park! It's secret for a reason... ;-)

Maroubra is all but off limits - you need a current aksa tag and they only let 4 kiters out at a time, forget it if the beach is busy too.

Hey Monkey,
There is no access to Towra by foot...there is a bird and wildlife sactuary to the south of towra. It would be quite a hike through the mangroves anyway if it were allowed. Best way to get there is by boat or by kiting over from dolls in a noreaster. you could also park a car at dolls and set up at kurnell and do a downwinder in a noreaster.
