Petition?

With all the talks of bans etc at Cottesloe is it worth while getting together a petition/letter to the mayor campaign going, lots of international kiters will help here (refer kiteforum with e-mails) and it will help show that there are a number of kiters wanting to use the spot that are not just the 100 or so WAKSA members.

As I am not from the electorate I have no say on who is running the show at Cottesloe but yet they can impact my quality of life with there discissions.

Banning kiters from a local beach is short sighted IMO, forget about the public liability issues at the moment, kiters generate income, Blow ins stay in back packers, pubs are used as meeting points, burgers (in my case that’s a lot of burgers) bought after session's etc all bring money into that community.

I feel the Cottesloe council will be breaching its duty of care if the ban kiters from the dutch inn to groyne stretch, this section of the beach is not swimmer friendly, A designated patrolled beach with board sports already banned is only 800m to the North, we as a people have a right to use the oceans, sure designated areas are needed but these already exist. It’s a bit off when you have more chance off been hit by a stray golf ball from the council endorsed golf coarse in the same area.

By banning kitting from that beach will then shift that kiting community on which will in turn place pressure on other beaches and in fact increase the risk. It would be interesting to see if “hypothetically” if they banned kiters from the beach and then I hurt myself/other at another beach if I could sue the council for removing me from a safe area? Especially as dutch inn area does not have a big swimmer/surfer/family sandcastle population!!!

And yep its now time for us all to start self policing our local spots and it does not matter if you are a waksa member or not.

Save our beaches

another idea that i have read is to give a kitesurfing lesson to the mayor/ranger let them see how easy it is to use a quick release demon safety messures and levels of training/skill required. on a positive side they might even get addicted to kiting as well

ideas man i have a head full of them just waiting to get out, ahh swith off the lights its hurting my eyes noooooooo.

these are just ideas any CONSTRUCTIVE critism is more than welcome

unfortunately for all the kiters out there doing the right thing, it is those few acting irresponsibly that give the others a bad name. If one person does one thing wrong and one person complains it brings the whole sport into the spotlight. You never hear of the 90% of kiters who act responsibly and so in the eyes of the council, if one is doing it then all are doing this. this concept of self regulation is an excellent idea as we should take the responsibility on our selves, as shunter said we shoul start policing our own spots and this means if you see someone acting in a way that is likely to get us kicked out of an area, get a group of kiters together approach them and let them know this is not the way we want things done. peer pressure can be a good thing.
Kiting is an extreme and potentially dangerous sport and we choose to put ourselves at risk however for someone who has been going to that particular beach for 10 years does not choose to put himself at risk with kiting and therefore should not have the onus placed on him for his own safety when the risk is at the hands of other people.
finally as has been said before many people stop and approach to take a look at a sport which they may not have seen before, you know the potential for risk and injury, they do not. so if they are coming for a closer look let them know where a safe place to be is, ie. upwind. if they don't just say you won't launch the kite untill they move, they are there to watch someone fly a kite, not some expensive polyester lying on the ground. they will move
ok thats my two cents
now lets get ready for this weekend, the chart says WIND

fellas

good ideas and thoughts all round.... however.

this is what WAKSA is attempting. we are lobbying local councils and interested parties to give kiting a good name and we're trying really hard to ensure continued access.

the best way to support the cause without question is to join waksa. all the effort is great, but think how easy it is to pay a bit of $$ (see below).

if we can go to these bodies and inform them that most of the kiters in WA are members of the association, then they will start listening to us.

like the golfers who probably have a bunch of pull because they have money, and they have the support of their members, we would be able to have much more influence if we had the numbers on our side.

for something that we're all so passionate about, we should all be pushing membership of WAKSA to fellow kiters, mates etc etc.

last night WAKSA agreed to alter the membership slightly, and for this year, you can take a membership from 01.05.2004 - 30.09.2004. the prices are now $30 for singles, and $60 for families (for the above mentioned period).

that's pretty good value for something that is so important to us all. i mean imagine not being able to rock down the beach and fly... that would seriously suck!!

GET BEHIND WAKSA! ask your local guys about membership or contact waksa direct.

Sorry Shunter but the phone box is out as a set up and rigging spot, we must all move 70m South to Rosendo Street. Or any where South of that(avoid the wind surfers). Mate we are all gutted by, we haven't been banned, but we feel South of Rosendo Street we will have about a 90% less interaction with the general public. I spoke to the Ranger and so did Ian Young and I can Assure you they are 100% into banning us in all of the Cottesloe shire. The Rangers are putting together a submission with video edivence to put before councile and have us Banned ASAP.
