Is it just me or has trying to sell second hand near new gear at a somewhat respectable price gotten much worse in 2008? I have sold quite a few boards and kites over the past few years as I suffer from regular "upgradeitus" but never really had a significant problem until this year. Most of the time the gear would sell within 2 or 3 weeks at a crappy but not ridiculous price. Since approx. Jan this year it has taken literally months to sell anything 2007 or 2008, and only after absorbing something like a 40%+ hit on say a kite that's less than 6 months old in near new condition or a 50% hit on perhaps last years board in similar condition. The only winners are the kite companies that pump out "new models" at a ridiculous rate and those looking for a great deal on a next to new kite. I recently joined a coffee forum and have been monitoring the used gear section. What a difference!! 3+ year old gear used every day and selling in literally days for 33% or less than current retail price. Too bad you can't fly espresso machines!

Perhaps there isn't a downward spiral... perhaps I've just become a lousy salesman. Although from what I have seen there do appear to be a lot of bargains out there.

The only ones who really enjoyed this down market are these doggies who found each other on seabreeze.

Nah... not getting a respectable price on used gear means less money for "luxury items" such as doggy biscuits. My dog is as upset as I am. I have only showed a head shot, as the rest of her is skin and bones... Last year she was nice and plump.

Maybe because 2-3 yr old gear is so good these days - joe blogs is harder to sell Boosted kitehype prices when theres so much good used stuff about.

unless your a pro rider on the Edge... its hard to gauge the difference thus going the cheaper alternative works for a lot of people - as youve experienced.

Maybe...

I totally agree Buschy. . this year I've sold 4 older kites and have a 5th still for sale . . a 2005/6 best nemesis in VGC that I can't give away for $120. Have taken a big hit to get rid of the other kites, dropped 50% on a Naish Raven one over a year of owning it. I had to get rid of these kites because I'm moving overseas and just want to take one new kite. Personally I reckon everyone wants a bow or a hybrid and nothing over 12m.

PS I have one of these, La Scala Butterfly, use it every day, it's a beautiful machine and it will hold it's value

Nice HX machine! I have a VBM Levetta.

I can understand why the market for kites marketed as "high performance>intermediate to advanced" is perhaps a bit smaller, this would apply to the 11m Edge2 I currently have (yes, on sale ). However, I thought my previous hybrid kite earlier this year, a 12m 2008 North Rebel, would be easy to sell, given that it was forgiving, had massive wind range and was practically brand new. Nope. Took a few months to sell at over $700 off the retail price. My previous 9m and 12m 07 Rebels went quicker and in my opinion were not as good. The 06 12m Vegas I had before that was snapped up in a day or two after almost 12 months continuous use at a half decent price. I won't bore you with the details of all the other kites I bought and sold before that....

At the end of the day, it's a hobby/sport and you pay a certain amount each year to enjoy it. It's too bad that the cost per kite seems to be going up at a fairly significant rate with each year that passes. Can always stop buying new gear I guess, but that's part of the fun.....

Buschy, Buschy my boy you seem like a decent sort of fellow who enjoys a good hit of caffeine and focuses on the positives in life. So don't let this temporary dip in the kite market dampen your spirits - look for the positives. The way I see it you love your new gear - so much so that, just like the caffiene, you need a regular fix - and there's nothing wrong with that. A nice crisp kite to get your blood pumping and amped for the next session. Not only are you stoked, but so are plenty of others. The local kite shop guys are happy - they made another sale. The kite industry types are happy - they get to design and manufacture new kites, and the bloke who bought your second hand stuff - well he is super stoked. The gear may be old but it's better than the crap he used to use and he's amped for the next session too.

So forget the negatives, focus on the positives and get out there and buy some new gear.

Cheap bastards like me need you

Ha ha ha ha... took the words outta my chops!

BTW I am a tea drinker, it costs me about 3.50 for a diffuser thingamy.

Coffee is revolting 'gourmet mud' and yes, I am used to be treated poorly by baristas, in silly hats, that take themselves faaaarrr too seriously and fling a cr@ppy teabag at me.

Yeah but I've tasted the coffee you keep at your house, no wonder you don't drink it. I wouldn't give that out at a 'feed the homeless' van. I think it had cobwebs in it anyway, it was that old.

Tea's alright but you've obviously never had a really good coffee, I mean a REALLY good coffee . I had one once and I've been trying to replicate it ever since. The elusive "god shot". Mmmm...

Yeh, I would agree that quite a lot of stuff out there isn't very good, it's what prompted me to start buying my own half decent gear and giving it a go.

Our local kite shop up here is actually now half kite shop half espresso bar... Pauly makes a pretty good cup of coffee.

Oh yeh that's in the jar marked 'Visitors only' We used to have a septic tank at our place and.. er.. probably best if you keep thinking that was coffee old bean!!

My probiscus warns me to stay away from coffee (ALL coffee) every time I smell it. I did drink coffee occasionally as a nipper but truly find it revolting and have zero ineterest in aquiring a taste - unlike durries when young (although previously passively addicted - see smoking post) and Guinness as a 20 sumpin.

If you had never tried coffee (and weren't addicted to it already) you'd probably think only crazies drank the gear.. Kinda like seppos who come to Oz and try Vegemite for the 1st time and think we are: a) crazy loco with no taste bud receptors b) trying to pass off roadkill paste as breakfast spread.

Tea is GOOD for you coffee is not. Going without tea also does not make me want to strangle my workmates (more so than usual).

erm... back on the topic of the market going to shizen... Anybody got an 11m C kite (think Yarga/Vegas etc) in crispy condition to sell to a funky tightwad who loves the way gear drops in value with every shiny new kite launched?
