How common are thieves on the west coast of australia, particularly with kite gear??? I am coming from a small town in Canada where i have no problem leaving my brand new truck un-locked with my DH bike and kite gear in the back outside over night. I don't expect many other places in the world to be this slack, but what is western oz like??? Do I need to chain everything down whenever i take my eyes off it, or will common sense be enough???

Hey Sanamarco,

Hoops right, theft is a big problem here in WA. Depending upon where you kite, just about everyone I know has had their cars broken into and kites, wallets, phones, laptop (mine), boards and just about anything else of value has been nicked.

Worst beaches are Woodmans Point, Leighton Beach, Contacio's Beach, Pinnaroo Point and Mullaloo Beach. These are all the popular kite beaches and I suspect if you park your car at any of the lesser used beaches along the coast you will get the same treatment.

I do not put kiting stickers on my car because if you are the only one out flying a kite on the water and your car is the only one in the carpark with kiting stickers all over the windows ..... well it dont take a genius.

Drive an old ****ter, leave nothing in it and the windows down, take all your gear to the beach with you and DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR KEYS in the kite bag. Many kitebags have been nicked even when empty but still containing car keys.

Good winds and slow painful death to all theives,

West Oz is totally awesome for a windy summer, pity about the carpark vermin

obviously it depends a lot on where you are, i dont reckon you'll have much trouble once you get away from the big smoke.
i have never locked my house, and my car keys have never left the ignition since i moved here. (i do lock up my Triumph Bonny but only coz i am overprotective of her)
don't ruin your trip by being paranoid everywhere you go, especially in remote spots

but dont forget, we are a nation of convicts[}:)]

well thats not what i wanted to hear, but its better to know now than learn a hard lesson. I plan on living out of a van during my time in Oz, so i guess i am going to need to make sure it is locked up tight whenever i hit the beach.

What do you guys suggest doing when i actually get out on the water. I will definately tie my keys to my neck when i'm kiting, but what should i do will my kite bag and pump, will they be nicked off the beach, or is that kind of stuff pretty safe???

i caught some young kids stealing my kite bag & pump last summer at Newcastle (NSW), saw them just in time and caught them in the dunes.

Not many people leave they're bags and pumps on the beach here anymore, most pump they're kites up near the car park and leave everything in they're car..

most kite beaches are not crowded so thieves run rampant at them but coming from SA i can tell you this place is laughably safe. no one is going to shoot you for your phone, poison your dog or kidnap your family. its only the materialistic things you need worry about. gear is pretty safe at peli pt though. dont leave your easy to pinch items at the beach as they will get nicked eventually.

Things could be worse....

A Man was parking his car [complete with Rottweiler in the back seat] on a Dublin street, when a 10 year old budding extortionist came running over....."tha'll be foive quid fer loooking after yer caaar meeester!" .

"My young friend" says the driver with belittling smile ''I think you will find that the Rottweiler will do that.''

" Hey Meeester" came the reply " doz ur dawg pu ow Fires?"

Hey Ray,

Paul and Odin went kiting at Mullaloo a month or so ago at 6am in the morning (practically dark) and went out for an hour before work, came back to stolen kite, wallet and phone ... the usual.

They suspect it is a local who can view the kites flying from their home and once the kites are out in the water, they take their sweet time and help themselves. Me thinks a sting is in order

Countless break-ins last year in the Pinnaroo car park too, although mainly on weekdays, too many people around on weekends.
People beware of leaving valuables in your car at Pinnas or Mullas.

Good winds and slow painful death to thieving vermin

I haven’t had any problems with stuff getting pinched at shoalwater bay. But then I try not to give them the opportunity.

I lock everything wallet, sunnies, phone, stereo face in the boot even my car keys ( I only go kiting with my boot key) because the only way to get into my boot is with a key because of the gas tank. The only thing I leave on the beach is my kite bag and pump and anything that I can handle being pinched.

It hasn’t happened yet but if I imagine if I leave all my valuables on the beach unattended it’s only a matter of time before they go walkabouts. It’s mostly the old and un-fit that take their dogs for a walk down there.

Dont bring anything you dont want to lose to the beach in WA. I kite with my car key in my pocket, wallet and mobile at home. I was out with a friend who I was teaching to kite for the first time and his early 90s corolla had a window smashed, half the dash torn up with a crow bar or something? stereo deck gone (he accidently left the stereo face at home), his camera stolen out of the boot of his car which was wrapped in a beanie and stuffed in the corner, 2 shirts, pair of shoes and a pair of jeans gone (they left one shirt??)... luckily his wallet and mobile were on the beach with some of our gear. They really tore up the car trying to find hidden items.

If you plan on leaving a travelling van in a car park to go kiting, make sure it is not an isolated one. Try Melville waters and Cott. Dont leave it at leighton otherwise you will lose all your gear within 2 or 3 sessions.

Beware of Forster on the East coast if anyone is coming over East.My car and kites were stolen and torched by joyriders .The cops said the stretch of highway along the national park near Tiona is notorious for theft.

Unfortunately, "pinching" is a bit of a cultural thingy here IMO. Anything that is not chained down seems to be game.

One does what what one can to protect oneself, but in a wierd way it is like sharkie.........if you think and worry about it too much, you loose the joy of what you are doing.

haha that's so funny. The origions of your country stem from pinchin stuff. you are descendents of crims.

although i think it's just a new way of scaring tourists off your hallowed kitebeaches. The cats now out of the bag in regards to the fremantle doctor so you guys now have to dream up some other means of keeping everyone away.

Maybe I should bring some South African car guards back with me in November, they will also pump your kite for you and run out your lines for one low price . And they got firearms...
