Any suggestions as to the best way to land the kite on your own without just letting go of the bar sending it into a spiral?

Will the "dive it towards ground from about 15m up at edge of window (on the side where leash is at top of kite) then unhook and let go of bar before impact" technique work with the leash on a rear/outside line?

It works for me (most of the time) But only in light winds, there is a whole post on this subject already. Do a search

get a kite with a 5th line. Works a charm in any wind.

Get a windwing with the S.A.F.E system, Depowers the kite without a complex 5th line system.

The self landing technique I use is a controlled dive at edge of window onto leading edge, then pull on backline going to nearest wingtip to turn leading edge into wind. At this time you may have to run slightly downwind to flatten and turn kite leading edge directly into wind. On first attempts you may find kite won't lie leading edge down across it's whole length and you need to be slightly more aggressive on the dive.Do not release from CL until kite leading edge is FLAT on beach over entire length...in this way if kite rolls back slightly you can easily relaunch at edge of wind window and try again. If it all goes pearshaped be prepared to bail early and pull the QR...pays to practise in a suitable area with unobstructed runoff downwind. If at all in doubt pop QR with kite out over water... it may be wet and full of sand but at end of day it'll be undamaged and you also!

I tried a self land yesterday with a 12m bow. Stay hooked in with leash attached. Pull depower strap all with way in with kite at 12o'clock. Moved the kite to 2o'clock. Let go of bar. Grab the top of the depower strap where both front lines are attached and pull down past your body. With the other hand grab the top front line and pull in quickly. Your timing has to be right as the lines become slack. The kite dropped to the ground leading edge down and turned into the wind. The wind wasn't huge, but i can see it working in stronger wind as the kite is constantly depowered. If you don't get the timing right you can relaunch, since you are hooked in, and try again. Very simple and worked well.
