Any tips out there to drop it nicely? My old one seemed easier but i activated the recon which i think may have been a mistake?

hey man, i used to ride an 05 co2
add a ring to one of the rear line balls, that way you can hook your leash on there and land in the normal 4 line kite fashion, seen below. (use a leash with a quick release... not your hand! :) )

recon is cool but no good for landing, better for when your getting dragged towards something hard as a second quick release and not worth using unless your in a bad situation. (the punch out is cool for launching though, just remember to reset it to ride when the kites in the air..)

Yeah, I also used to use the recon for landing which does the job but really not smoothly at all and your lines get really tangled. Go for the flagging option like uncle rico says.
