I saw a post about people using the Ronstan side release shackles, and people saying they think they are safe because they are a good brand?
(Ronstan do make good yachting gear)
That type of shackle has been involved in a large number of accidents and kitemares, it DOES NOT RELEASE UNDER LOAD.
I have seen the welded ring pulled off one, and the cheapo copies the unwelded ring has pulled out.
The only shackle that should be used for kitesurfing is the WICHARD brand and only models 2684 and 2683 care needs to be taken on how you rig the wichard, can photos be posted here??

You are dead right steve. I have seen someone try and release a ronstan side release shackle when the wind had picked up, did not release. Look at the design and its clear it won't.

I have a wichard release. It releases underload and is built strong.

I bought mine second hand from a boat chandlery for about $70. As i now use a different chicken loop system I am not using it, if anyone wants to buy it let me know.

But steve is right - those side release ones dont work when you want them.

I'm interested in buying your Wichard. Which model is it?
