calcanael (sp?) fracture?

i managed that, although i avoided surgery and metal work.

doc said non load bearing for 8-12 weeks, partial load bearing for some weeks after that. i avoided a cast, had a splint i was supposed to use for 8+ weeks.

in reality i was non load bearing for about 5 weeks, partial load bearing for another couple weeks or so. i started kiting again around week 8/9, but i gotta stress the doc didnt like it too much, the physio ok'ed it in terms of muscle/tendon activity me and i was just cruising and being overly cautious. i was really just trying to work on building my leg back up and getting some flexibility in my ankle.

around week 12 i was able to run flat out again. it was probably say 15 weeks in before i dared to take a really harsh landing. interestingly it switched my weak side and strong side around. im natural and hurt my right foot. i sheltered it from heavy landings for a long time, ie only trying stuff on starboard tack... as a result i learnt a bunch of stuff on starboard tack where usually i was trying stuff port tack.

im fairly fit, this can have a big impact on recovery time, remember the docs have to be cautious as some patients are not in good health etc etc. pay attention to your diet, drink lots of milk, eat lots of fruit and protein, dont eat takeaway crap or fatty crap. this will take weeks off your recovery.

i still get some minor aches every once in a while, i do notice the cold a bit more in that foot, and my ankle joint is relatively stiff compared to the other foot, but otherwise id consider it a complete and full recovery. i do however, wonder if it will be a problem for me in say 10-20 years :)

dont rush it. sounds like you did a real number on it compared to me. id bet you wont be on the water for another month or two.

not a good fracture to have

was the subtalar joint involved?

get on an exercise bike and get the leg working

pool based exercises good too, try to keep joints moving

get good advice from sports physio and work it hard

best of luck

Hey bolgo, I am able to see physio in couple of weeks non load bearing at the moment and I have been swiming in the sea, that is really good.
whats the subtalar joint ? I think thats cool because the Doc has not mentioned that one.

Yea I rolled my right ankle only yesterday - running into dry sandbar on a wakeskate, done the same on my left ankle last weekend, well worth it though lol. Guess luky as im only limping a bit and its not stopping me kiting. But 4 weeks ago had a bad sprain and my ankle is still swollen from it

One of the local crew here badly broke his ankle earlier this year (around March some time I think). Same deal.....crashed 'sans board' in really shallow water and bang....broken ankle, big time. He's still got all the metal in there and he's still not back at work. He's just sold his kites/board etc too because there's no possibility of kiting in sight . Poor bastard.....I caught up with him on the beach the other day and he's bummed big time.....trying unsuccessfully to think of things to do that *might* give him the same stoke as kiting.

it sucks to have a broken ankle / foot etc but it gives you a good opportunity to buy a water housing for your video camera and get out there to do some filming
