After a rather unsuccessful (for me) kite out at North woodies, some friends and i decided to try our kite luck further at coogee beach.

Initially good fun with small waves/swell to mess about on nice northerly wind for the ten.

Anyway, my friend wiped out loosing his board and got tea bagged, he couldnt get back to his board, though tried for a while and eventually gave up body dragging in.

I thought i would do the right thing and look around for his board and grab it for him.
on an outward run spotted what i thought was the board however on closer inspection saw it was a dead seal calf. Behing the calf was the board.
So grabbed the board, brought it in, dropped on the beach and back out.
On this tack saw a fin, i am 99% sure it wasn't a dolphin, as the fin just cut through the water, was a light grey as apposed to dark grey and i felt spooked.

I went back out for anothr look, think i saw a fin again, but cant be sure, however couldn't see the seal anywhere.

So are there nasty Sharks in Cockburn Sound, i know for sure there's seals as have seen them when fishing off the jetty there.....spooky.
and how vunerable do you feel when body dragging, its like your a lure........

in my ten years of surfing fishing, sailing etc off the WA coast i have never seen a shark. Yeah i've seen them in Indo, and had them take my catch when fishing off the shelf, but never feeding in so close as today.

Spooky

UBER!!!!! i knew you'd respond.
No iwasnt worried, spooked. My mate was worried afterwards, as he'd been dragging about like a lure blissfully unaware that there was a dead seal nearby.
I reckon the shark was more interested in a seal cub than our rubber blubber.

I was the guy who went out as you guys came in. Didn't see the shark, but saw a seal cub near the pole having a play, it didn't look injured. I suppose this was a another seal. I wasn't going to hang around and have a closer look though. Came off a few time in the swell as the wind picked up and I was barely hanging on. Few long body drags a fair way out. next time don't say theres a shark. I would rather go blissfully unaware. Atleast my final seconds would be alright. Rather then, having my final moments on this planet in absolute fear, as It could have been today.

I think next time it would be smarter to go upwind/upsteam of the people fishing off the jetty. There were probably sharks having a go at the fish attracted by the fishermen.

Yeah your right Carbine, should have gone north of the jetty.....long way north...know next time.
Sorry to have warned you there was a shark around.....didnt mean to worry you or put you off your game. just wanted to let you know so you could make an informed decision to go or not to go.
Would have felt a right **** if you had got taken and no-one warned you.......know next time.

I am sure though that the shark was interested in the dead seal. If it was a great white i've been told it would have killed the seal, and left it to bleed to death and returned to eat. I probably saw it returning to eat hopefully focused on the seal and not my substantial guts.

I didnt get a good look at the seal to see if there was a chunk out of him, couldnt see any blood onthe water, and when i went back out couldnt see the dead seal anywhere.

PR,

I saw at least three dolphins from the beach between South Freo and Coogee a week ago.

Well, that was a week ago...but i prefer thinking that what you saw was a dolphin.

Happy fear!

Carbine, wouldnt wish it on anyone, myself or otherwise.

Fred, i am sure it was a shark, i'm convinced as the shape and colour of the fin, the way the fin travelled through the water, the sudden disappearance of the seal cub are to my mind all consistient with shark.

couldnt say on the fin, reasonable size looked very shark like, definatly not dolphin.
Dunno about the shark didnt get close enough to see an outline.
I thought of you as i wrote the tale, and thought i bet uber is on this like a flash!! I know your passion for these kinda things.

You were my hero today Reli Baby!

I lost my board in that swell and decided to head in to shore rather than keep body dragging to a board I could no longer see. For some reason, while out there in Cockburn Sound I just decided to high tail it to shore....it was fast and furrious with loftings. Pinned the kite on shore and decided to stroll up and down the beach looking for the board.

Next thing I see you with the board under your arm, thanks mate. And then when you told me about the seal and shark, AND that you were going out there again to confirm..........I was so FN impressed A real man of the sea.

For me, the fact that I dopped my board near a dead seal with circling shark and almost instinctibely headed back in so fast, makes me feel like a very lucky man.

And Carbs, your so cool too....no sharky going to ruin my kite

Never a dull moment in the wet and wild....great FN day

you are all such fantastic kiting buddies, pretty much spent our entire summer together kiting the west coast... we were like family!
but you guys brought tears to my eyes reading this...
you got me thinking...
if any one of us got into trouble with a shark it would be absolutely devastating for all of us!
so poor reli can you please not go for a second look next time!
i bet the sharks will now smell my fear and get me when i go out next!!

Oh, That story rocks PR!!!
Some friends and I spent 10 days kiting at Nanga Bay Caravan Park (Shark Bay), and on a windless morning drove up the road 20 km to see schools of Tiger Sharks! I reckon these babies would chomp you up, spit out the rubber and use your kite lines to floss their teeth.
I think Dolphins rise to the surface only fairly momentarily, where as sharks stay at the surface for a while!
I've got the willies. Probably was a shark!

I've seen lots of sharks out there. Even been bumped a few times.

Don't spend too much time dragging through the water.

Our sharks, usually, don't hold a candle to yours in terms of follow through. Still, one of the few incidents involving kiteboarders and a shark that I have heard about in Florida also involved a board leash. This was probably 4 or 5 years ago and in the Panhandle of the State near a fishing pier. The guy was riding along and a shark was rising and biting the guy's board leash as he moved along. Strangely enough, this same guy, Paul Menta, had a shark attack in late in 2001 while riding. He landed on top of a shark, without knowing it, put his hand down and the shark latched on to it. He initiated an involuntary jump shark and all. I understand he is healing from a too close encounter with a baracuda, currently. This one was from spearfishing though. Play nice with the sealife!?

Swinginginthewind...Went to Shark Bay a couple of years ago. Stayed about 10 days at Nanga in about November and got alot of good wind! Used evrything from the 16m early in the day through to an 8m some afternoons. Only had about one day with not enough wind. I think we struck it lucky. Amazing how you forget about sharks until you lose your board or drop your kite!
Hows the shark footage in 'Deep Blue', those large schools of hammerheads, etc. Absolutely awesome!

Sharks have poor eyesight and don't rely on that sense for killing.

Just heard a story from a guy spearfishing off Kurnell who was being harassed by a bullshark about 6ft long. He ended up shooting the thing point blank in the side of the head cause it started bumping into him and trying to bite him. After being shot the shark swam down about 20ft dragging the guy down with it till he let go of the spear and swam back up, leaving the shark flailing around the bottom. Then his mate came down and shot the shark again to put it out of its misery.
Pretty hectic and they ended up dragging the shark back in and ate it
