T'was sailing at the phone box on Friday and saw a big grey snout sticking out of the water......nearly came in.......but the wind was on the way up, so what can you do? New trick coming up........whole leg off jump. Haven't stuck the landing yet.
I was driving up and down the beachs Sunday looking for the wind. I gave up and arrived at Cottesloe for a swim at 5pm, 5 minutes after the shark alarm. "Something odd here?" I thought when saw about 5,000 people sitting on the sand and not a soul in the water.
I heard later it was a 5m hammerhead. I did some reading on sharks recently cos I'm terrified. I'm dressed like a seal, and when I'm body dragging back to my board I look like a fishing lure. So what are my chances of being taken as a bait?
If I can remember right the web site told me that in the last 200 odd years there's been about 392 attacks recorded worldwide by Hammerhead sharks ... but not one fatality. The sharks to worry about were Bronze Whalers (Bull Sharks) found around Perth and in the river, Tiger sharks (I've been told they're only found in Shark Bay and Hawaii), and White Pointers (famous between Perth and Rottnest).
Daniel from Woodies told me he accidentally stepped onto a shark, which probably got as much of a surprise as him. It swam off quickly but unfortunately in the same direction that Daniel was going to get away :-)
There was a school of hammerhead sharks seen swimming in between Perth and Rottnest the day of the kitesurf race.
Has anyone else seen a shark while body dragging back to their board? What .. did .. you .. do ??? Graeme
Yes I've seen a hammer head while dragging back to my board, not a man eater but big enough to draw blood, what did i do. Left the board behind and headed for land, dam near invented bearfoot kitesking.
FYI There are multiple species of what are known as "Whalers" (11 well known ones in fact) this includes Bronzies, bull, dusky whalers, sandbar, silky, pig eye, Grey reef, spot tail, black tip, black tip reef, all whalers and often wrongly called bronzies. Many of these sharks are found along the entire coastline of WA. Tiger sharks are known to be found from basically Cape Leuwin north to the border and on... Great whites our most feered and favoured is found from along the entire south coast then North to North West Cape (Exmouth). Basicaly there are sharks everywhere and they are particularly prevelent in WA. So dont worry about thenm they are always there and alays will be. Id be worrying more about the newby with the oversize kite in his hands.
