I reckon they should ban burley bags 10 Kms of the beaches.....those big boys should be eating whales not outboards or surfers or swimmers...........

I love this whole shark stuff....if it would only work to keep people out of the water....for those who thought the river was safe...think again.


Trust officers have been patrolling the Swan and Canning rivers over the weekend searching for the dolphin, but it has not been sighted again.

Swan River Trust principal scientist Kerry Trayler said the dolphin appeared to have been attacked by a large unidentified shark, but they could not be sure whether the attack happened in the river or at sea.

Dr Trayler said there had been very few incidents involving sharks in the Swan and Canning rivers.
It was not known what species of shark had caused the injury to the dolphin.

“The lower end of the river system is very saline and marine species may move in and out of that area,” Dr Trayler said.

“Bull sharks are the only shark species that are known to stay in fresh and brackish waters for extended periods.”

The Trust is asking the public to take extra care in the river as bull sharks can be more active in the rivers at this time of year.

Adult bull sharks are thought to enter the Swan and Canning rivers in spring and summer to give birth to their young.

They may then move back to the ocean.

“Bull sharks are ambush predators that swim close to the bottom, so particular care should be taken in areas where deeper drop-offs occur,” Dr Trayler said.

Anyone who has seen the injured dolphin is asked to contact the Trust on 9278 0900. Shark sightings should be reported to the water police 24-hour hotline on 9442 8600.

Bull sharks are responsible for more shark attacks on humans than almost any species. Luckily they tend not to eat all of you, just take a nice deep bite and let go.

The Conservation Council of WA said the "guilty until proven innocent'' approach was a kneejerk reaction to public concern that would harm the environment and would not protect swimmers.

My mate has been living on a boat on the brisbane river for six months. He reckons he's seen that many bull sharks that he's never jumping in again, and he is not a pussy he kites like 10km out to sea on his own.

Not a single person has died in Australia playing Russian Roulette. In keeping with Laurie's reasoning (or lack thereof), it is therefore much safer than horse riding.
