Hi all
I had one solo session at Waddy Point 4 years ago but haven't heard about anyone else's experiences. While I was there I heard all the rumours but didn't see any schools of sharks.Even saw a few guys surfing small sets at Waddies. Is the place rotten with sharks? Are they tigers? Is the east side worse than west? Is it a seasonal thing?
Any local knowledge would be great..........Thanks
Tezza

i was there camping 2 years ago. the locals told us that they surf but always have 1 guy standing up on a dune somewhere to spot for sharks??

probably just trying to scare us but most people we talked to said swimming isnt allowed because of sharks.

I would not be going there in the near future as the big toyota fishing comp has just finished and I am sure there is plenty of blood and guts around leaving a good reason for the sharks to be hanging around for a little while

Don't go in the water, the island is home to the sharks, fraser is close to the deep water off the east coast and it a feeding place for some pretty big sharks aswell.

hotspot fishing spots produce packs of rogue sharks out for a free feed. i'm sure headlands around frazer come into that category.
use caution, and dont use fish oil based sunscreens.

by the way prepare, whats the guy on the hill going to do as the shark attacks at twenty knots?

yell oi!

I WENT ON A KITE/SURF TRIP THER A FEW YEARS AGO. ON THE FIRST DAY AS WE ARRIVED AND WERE DRIVING UP THE BEACH WE STOPPED TO WATCH 2 GUYS PULLING IN A 8 FOOT TIGER SHARK WITH THEIR SURF ROD. WE DIDNT GET WET THAT TRIP.

If you really want to kite, then I don't see how the sharkies can get in the way...just don't fall in! and don't be mean to the little buggers.

I’ve asked this question of my Father who takes fishing holidays at Fraser.

He said he’s seen large sharks in the shore break and asked me not to kite there.

Either he prefers my legs attached to my torso or he’s holding out on holiday house use.

Fraser and Moreton are two places i would never go in the water... good places for watching sharks in the surf.

The Pin is another spot. I have seen a shark on more than 1 occasion cruising in the surf to the south of the mouth. Dropping your kite on an outgoing tide at the Pin is not a good thing for more than 1 reason.

Anyway chances of getting munched while up and riding would have to be slim at best.

BE CAREFUL THERE MATE!

I fly for a living and quite often fly over the east and west sides of the island. We have seen tigers well in excess of 5 metres cruising the coast, and quite regularly to boot. The place is rife with the bastards particularly to the north. The east side has mostly tigers the west side has bull sharks and a few other less aggressive species, both bull and tigers are as bad as each other. If your going in I recommend you avoid lathing yourself with burley whilst spearfing with your dog. If you must go in you can get sharkleashes for about 400 bucks. And yes they do work, ive seen footage where its strapped around sliced up tuna and the shark freaks out when it goes near it.

That said, I see tones of tigers here in the sunny coast, quite often within metres when spearing and surfing. When there is plenty of food and good vis they arent real keen on you so dont be getting too paranoid. If you are going in in fraser do on the cusp of high tide when the water is at its cleanest.

Thanks for the feedback guys.....we'll be kiting Fraser Thursday avo. If the swell's big at the northern tip might kite the sand bars on strapped boards and keep a power boat on standby for any broken lines etc. If the swell's only going to be average will anchor next to a sandbar in the sandy straits instead and put the kicker up.
