Hi Guys,
I know there has been a few similar threads before about good spots in NSW including Jervis, Lake Macquarie, Stockton Beach, Hawks Nest etc, so my apologies for this one.
I have got a few days off work this week and am doing a solo trip somewhere to get myself hopefully "on board" before I come back.
I am looking for a quiet beach a few K's long to do downwinders untill "it clicks", where do you guys think would be the most appropriate spot assuming the wind is accomodating?? (No further than about 3hrs, north or south, from Sydney).

Arlo2004,

Dude, Hawks nest is probably the best place as it's nice and sheltered.
Also try Jimmys beach

Stockton is about 30kms long with waves, not for a beginer, but can be droped off at one end and picked up at the other, need a 4wd & permit anywhere in between.

Hawks nest - main beach, is about 11 kms long, need a 4wd & permit to get to the north end. Good downwinder with waves, not for a beginer

If you do not have a 4wd the above two will only offer short runs with NE winds generally onshore.

Hawks nest - bay side, about 2 1/2 kms from winda woppa around the bay to the other end at jimmys beach
If you are learning and cannot go upwind you could start at either end and you would get to the middle with about a 1km run. This would only be in a SW to SE. If it is NE wind the only option is a boat or walk (about 800m)out to the end of Jimmys beach (or a 4wd & a medical certificate for a special permit), this will be offshore so if you cannot go upwind and have no boat you will very quickly need to be rescued . This is scattered with lots of other people this time of year enjoying the water including jetskis, boats anchored from the shore and snorklers.

Lake Macquarie - there is only one spot on the lake worthy of a mention, and that is at belmont/swansea and only in a NW/SW, I would not come here for a holiday and have to rely on the wind, and when there is wind you can count on half the kiteboarders from newcastle to be there at the smell of any decent wind.

When you talk about "waves" at Hawks Nest, are they real waves, as in breaking heavily almost the whole way along the beach and is really not safe. Or is there just a couple of little breaks that are easily avoidable and the rest is pretty calm

Just spent 7 days at Hawksnest and when the wind is up, so are the waves. if leave the oceanside and head to Jimmies then there are no waves. In anything from the South, the wind at Winda Woppa and Jimmies is very gusty as it is comming off the hills at Nelson and so has rolling affect. Really interesting for jumps as just as you are comming down for your landing, you get lifted again. Has made me do more then a few faceplants. Best condition is NE in most east corner of Jimmies when tide out. It is off shore but between the two sand spits you have about 130m of waist deep water and you can use the sand spits to walk your kite back along if you cannot go up wind. If you are prone to dropping your kite alot then best forget about it altogether as the oceanside waves will eat your kite and Jimmies side will find you blown all the way to Nelson and having to take the ferry back.
On the plus side, If you love waves, We had the best 15k downwinder from Sandypoint all the way to Hawksnest last Monday. Great rolling waves and 20k steady winds. Great end to the Holliday.
