There's a three minute video for download that I shot at The Great Barrier Reef during Kiteweek. Download it at:

http://www.kitesurfing.com.au/Kiteweek_2005/AtTheReef/AtTheReef.mpg

It's about 37MB so I'd suggest saving to your disk rather than trying to play it directly from the web.

Seven of us were lucky enough to be chosen to go to a remote reef about 45km off Cairns, by a tiny coral cay only about 75m across. Once you're there, there's no visible land beyond the cay and if you get lost the prevailing winds will take you to Papua New Guinea--if you're lucky enough to make it that far.

It all looks perfect and fun but keep in mind, these blokes are kiting in about 25cm of water over razor-sharp coral, it's blowing 20 knots and it's HEAPS more choppy than the video would indicate.

Still, it was great fun and a magical experience that few will get the chance to have in their lifetime. Many thanks to Bruce Exton for organising and to Queensland Tourism for giving us the helicopter to shoot footage for their tourism promos and Kiteboarder magazine.

Great to see some more reef kite footage from our backyard.

My two-cents worth.....getting out to the Great Barrier Reef for kiting is something that everybody should do in their lifetime! It is not as hard as Robbo suggests. I organise educational marine biology reef trips for a living, 5-10 trips per year, plus research diving trips. You just need the right boat, some local knowledge, and enough people to make the boat charter cost effective. There are many, many charter boats operating out of the main ports along the NQ coast, with heaps of different accommodation styles and options.

Reef kiting is tide dependant, for sure, just like surfing a reef break, but you work around that. It wouldn't be my choice to kite in 20cm of water, but that water depth occurs only for a few hours at certain times of the lunar cycle. There are plenty of days around the neap tides, when there is 1m+ water for most of the day. Ideally the reef of choice has a cay for launching and landing, and with the charts we have these days it is easy enough to find one of those. For sure you want a rescue tender or a ski standing by, but any decent charter vessel will have that as part of the package.

I have a roving operator permit from GBRMPA for reef ecotourism, and being a long time wind and wave junkie, I thought it prudent to include dispensation for up to 10 non-motorised water craft on the permit. I also have good contacts with charter boat owner/operators in the Townsville and Cairns sectors, so if anyone is interested in following up the idea of a group reef kiting session, just let me know, I can pass on some good oil.

Sounds great. Subscribers to Kiteboarder Magazine will also recieve a free KBVM DVD every issue. This issue features the Cairns Kiteweek piece put together by Mears Productions as well as the entrants into the KBVM Reader Video contest (including the entrants to the Kiteweek Video Contest for those who were there).

Dr. Andy's right -- didn't mean to infer that it was all that difficult getting out there -- just that if anyone was going to criticise the riders for not doing hugely radical tricks I wanted folks watching to be aware of what the conditions were like on the day -- you're gonna be somewhat reluctant to do huge tricks when you know that a bad landing could mean major injuries... But, by all means, go out there and experience it. It's really not that difficult to organise. Find a good operator who knows the region and who has a solid, fast boat and you're laughing! Can't wait to see the footage that the Kiteboarder Mag guys shot from the chopper! Cheers, Robbo
