Hi Natter
Skim boards are hard to pick for size because of the shape but for kiting just go fo a medium size.
I'm doing 135x50 in a traditional skimboard pintail shape and they are great fun to ride.
Construction is the same lightweight wood core as our kiteboards with a formica base to stand up to the beach slides.
Other tips are avoid swallow tails nasty if they hit you and don't bother with the grip pads wax is fine.
If you want a demo ride let me know and I'll sort it out.

Cheers
Pete

I've been looking at all sorts of boards and the only one i have ridden is a mates and his in the U.S. now, but his board cost him around $500.They are so easy to ride i dont know why others dont have any info.Where abouts are you?
I'm in melbourne at the moment.I also want to ride it in small surf.I found that grip pads on your back foot made it easy to keep it in wright place, i haven't done it that much though.I would love a demo and more advise, i had so much fun in 8-10knots on a skim and want to ride at point leo in s/se winds in surf.
Thanks for getting back to me, i'm going to sample some tomorrow
Why dont others ride skim?

Yeap i will, i already have a few people interested.I realy want to ride them in small surf first.I've done it chop and i felt like i was skateing, in small surf and light wind i could imagine it would be better then useing a surfboard cos i've done that.

You could try a twin tip version possibly such as the...

www.nemolution.com/summer05/twintip-type2.html

Do you think skimboards great light wind ability would still work with footstraps and pads?? hmmm either im an idiot or im onto something...

Nemo boards are more for flatland skimming have a look at the sizing they are a lot shorter at around 100cm long.
Wave skims are longer around 130cm long with more nose rocker.
I've tried both with straps and without and definately without is the way to go.

Cheers

I was woundering about straps also but you have to move your front foot a fair bit so i dont think it would work. Its not that hard with out straps anyway and great for small waves or chop.
Addiction where are you so i can come and check some out?

well if they are epoxy they should cost more than a normal board. If they are wood, then they should be about 40$. The nemo ones are pretty pricey for wood.

Now we are talking....$40 bucks for a board, it's almost disposable.

The surfshop (the big one) at garden city and the sports store there should have some for ~40$. Infact you should have got a pamphlet in the mail today that hade some in there. Obviously they aren't equal to a $400-500 one.

The underground skim board is sick btw.

If you want to get a feel for a skimboard without paying much get a bit of 9ply plywood, cut out a teardrop shape around 130cm x 55cm, put a couple of layers of wood varnish on it and give it a go. Total cost around $25. I can email anyone a pic with an outline of the shape and dimensions.

I've made a couple this way and they aren't the prettiest or the best but they are fun when the wind is light, I'll probably make a smaller one for more wind when some wind finally reaches Sydney. Whenever someone has a go on my skim it is hard to get it back from them.

Realistically how much earlier can you get going on a skimmie vs just a big arsed twintip or a surfboard?

I would have thought that the kite is going to have to fly first & I know my 18m is a dog in less than 10 knots & I can be going upwind on my 6' twintip in 11knots - so what benefit is a skimmie going to give me?

Is it that you fly it with a small kite instead?

I used a 11m in 8-10knots with a skim and i had loads of speed and upwind.
When i get one and see you at rosebud you should have a go.
