Hi all,

Ive been "kiteboarding" for about a year now but havent progressed very far, only gotten up on the board once, I havent had the best of times learning the sport weather it be the black 13m kite i have or just bad luck in general, i find my self struggling and looking to you more experienced riders for advice.

I guess im not feeling as confident especially with my 13m kite as most of my bad experiences have come from it. But i also dont feel as confident going to my local area which is botany bay in sydney, i find it very much more intimidating compared to the beginner friendly area up the coast around tuncurry and old bar, which is why i travel so far for lessons.

So i ask fellow riders what can i do to keep going as i am committed to get riding but need advice on how to get more confident and enjoy kiteboarding like you all do.

as my intimidating 13m kite is an 06 model would some suggest starting a fresh with a new 08 model?

cheers guys

Hey KDA
I know there are lots of debates regarding C kites vs Bow etc etc. I also know that Kites have moved forwards in leaps and bounds and a lot of kites today have almost total depower which is a major benefit when learning. Also, with advances in kites it is possible to drop to an 11m or 12m and get the same sort of power as your older style kite but with more safety. There are also some beginners kite groups out there with people looking for support like yourself.... check out this posting and see if there are any groups there for you or create your own "support group", it is working really well for us.

Don't give up, if you don't feel comfortable kiting somewhere then that is fair as some places can be intimidating. Keep going with your trips to the "beginner friendly" areas until your confidence builds and keep going with the lessons until you are comfortable to go by yourself...

Id been flying my kite and body dragging for a little while but found myself face planting when trying to stand up. Turns out I was managing the kite OK but had **** all board riding skills. A mate took me wakeboarding, I got up first go wake boarding and had an awesome time. after that taking off with the kite and board was very easy. now been up and riding for a while and reckon Its time for me to get back behind a boat or to a cable park or back to some flat water to practice my board riding skills for a while. Just thought I'd mention it as it helped me heaps.

nope - quit while you're ahead and give up.
yep-changing kites is not the answer but time on the water will make the difference
maybe- try windsurfing

I agree with smedg, After a few wakeboarding sessions some on my kiteboard, getting up and riding was easy. if u are finding progession that hard mby start with a few more lessons on your own gear and see what teh instructor thinks. Iv been considering it myself, but im short $160

Goodluck with it mate

Maybe try a bigger board to get started. (i got started on a whopping 172 x 42 twin tip with an 05 kite)

Here's one excersise that got me upto riding the board.
As long as you've got enough beach not to be a nuisance:

(not great if you have bad knees)
sit on the beach flying your kite from one side to the other using the kite to pull you to your feet and skid on your heels a little way. this helps you get used to the feeling of getting up on your feet. Do this for 20-30 mins and by that time you should be able to do it without looking at the kite. This will also help you put board on feet while floating and flying the kite.

It might take longer but, full credit to ya, you must be a persistent person. 12 months and only once on a board. I woulda quit by now.

Keep going it is well worth it.

It could be worth pinching your mates seat harness for a session.

A seat harness will make putting your board onto your feet a little harder but wont throw you forward, face first into the water as bad.

The seat harness puts the kite's power straight to your feet.

What Colinwill78 said is excellent. Try that.

Dont give up! some people only take a few days to get it. Others can take a few years to get it.

If you can afford it, get an 08' kite but the 06' kites should be fine. What brand/model is your 13m and your board?

being intimidated by your kite could be setting you back a bit.
I found you gotta be confident enough to really dip your kite when water starting.
a newer kite might be an idea if the confidence that letting go will almost totally depower you will help ya.

prolly best to stay in the beginners area, maybe even get another lesson see if they can help ya out?

hang in there

I'm still a beginner and have been kiting awhile now due to lack of time on the water.

my initial mistake was to swoop the kite too much at the start.
Once up a couple of power stokes to pick your speed up and then you can keep the kite steady if there is sufficient wind, don't need to sine the kite continously - which I use to do and would quickly lose control.
My 08 kite is a lot easier to use than my previous c and bow kites.
My new board has made a big difference also - i use to have a big floaty board - which was hard to control.

Perhaps more lessons using your own gear as was previously suggested.
