G'Day All,

I thought this would make an interesting thread after having read Laurie's question about shark feeding habits.

Maybe if you have a fear of sharks, there is photos here you won't want to see, for others like myself, who have always had a healthy respect for these great creatures, check this out

http://www.ultimate-animals.com/shark_facts.htm

Some nice pics, especially the last one!

Cheers

Look at those satellite tracks....your not even safe in Exmouth. Adelaide looks like a place to take up golf.
It does reinforce the idea that high risk white pointer time in Perth is spring and early summer. Hence I tend to think twice about paddling out to the artificial reef in October and November if no one else is out.
Kiting is fine until the kite goes down and we start to mimic a giant Halco lure being towed through the water.

whilst kiting at woodies north side (offshore conditions)... a few weeks ago, the wind died and my kite dropped out of the sky.... i was about 300m from the shore at the time
im floating there thinking why me???
next minute i look down and see this black thing moving under me... my eyes have played tricks on me before but not this time!
it was slowly swimming under me and circling around....
i panicked and quickly jumped on my 115 board
i was wobbling on it desperately trying to balance
....but no it would not hold me...
i started to cry and then had to tell myself 'stop crying girl!! get a hold of yourself... crying isnt going to get you out of this one'
hmmmm
anyway the shark slowly swam off and i started swimming in waiting for it to bite my legs any second
i screamed out to my boyfriend to help me which he did (the honey that he is) but waited till he was right next to me before i mentioned the shark!
after being that close to a shark i have decided that they arent that bad after all....

last year i could not even get in the water because seaweed scared the crap out of me ... let alone sharks!
its amazing how your body sets itself to survival mode when you are in such a situation

As a rule I like a bit of garlic and lemon with a nice bronzy - you have to show em who's on the top of the food chain somehow (well on land anyhoo).
Maybe I will start stuffing a slice of lemon and a few cloves into the harness just to really put the wind up the noahs .
Hey at least if i cop the big munch i would like to think I was thought of as pleasant and agreeable

Ah, shark topics, it's almost as high on the list of topics in the human race as God and Politics; especially with kiting folk.

Personally, I will be the first to say that my biggest fear, apart from marriage (in July) is the great white. I am an import from South Australia and I don't live there anymore for one reason, dark shapes that are bigger than the average taxi.

I'm humbled in the environment that I live. (Geraldton and up and out to the Abrohlos) I'ts important to me that I keep a very honest perspective about it all and it's quite simple. Assessing risks before going on the water, in all circumstances minimise the risk of a bad encounter with creatures from the deep is one of my pre water considerations. I'll be the first to tell anyone, that arriving on the beach in the dark after a long swim is a life changing experience, it's simply humbling. Something to learn from and not to be repeated. from such an experience I learnt caution, but not fear, just enough to make me think about what I'm doing before doing it. Failing all that I have faith that I'm a nice guy and I don't deserve such a fate, I have so much to offer the world. That's why you won't find me under the narrows bridge.

Hey Gav,

I like you, have a healthy respect and moderate fear of sharks, especially the big white ones, however, I think you missed the one thing that makes this and most other sharks so scary is that they eat nice guys too.

I dont think that they discriminate between nice guys, bad girls, fat or thin people, young or old. That is the problem, they kill indescriminately and if you make it back to the beach after a long night swim back in, then you were either lucky or the shark wasn't hungry as was probably the case with Nonikkers. They may have even discovered you werent actually on their menu without having a taste test first as is the case with the Bull sharks or Bronzies.

I'm sure the guy who got taken at Cowarumup was a nice guys after having read the thoughts of friends and surfers who knew him. Minimizing the risk is the best bet, know the conditions they feed in and avoid thrashing around panicking if you are out there in trouble.

If you get nailed, it was just a roll of the dice and nothing more, at least if it happens to me, I will be in my playground where I am at my most peaceful and happy and would have been enjoying what I love the most, ..... the ocean!

I hate when people say that sharks decide we arent worth eating after the first bite.

I strongly belive that after the first bite they swim off to wait for you to bleed to death when they can come back and have an easy feast.

I had a friend killed by a shark attack about 10 years ago in South Oz, from the first 'taste test'. People go for the beach after an attack if they can, so the shark doenst get a chance to come back.

Do you think its strange that when people get attacked at a place they cant get in, ie. Blackfellas in SA, that the person is never seen again.

I personally think the government has a case to answer when they let a shark that has just attacked someone swim away. For a rare and endaged species, they can be quite busy.

All that said, I always say to my wife that if I get eaten it was my time and dont get too upset about it. Dont let it keep swimming around though.

two more cents, I have seen hammerhead sharks swimming off Brightion and Scarbough while kiting the last two seasons.

a relayed point from a sport shark fisherman who has caught almost all types of shark and all just inside the port phillip bay heads.
Some were to big to get in the boat some bigger than the boat, and were cut loose.

In his quest for better fishing spots, he asked a shark spotter plane pilot where he saw the biggest sharks the most.

Answer: 20m outside the breakers at all the main surf beaches!

rules: don't kite with seals and surfers. Wear a shirt with "i'm not a seal or surfer" written on the back, and "surfers that way (big arrow)"on the front.
girls should just kite in bikini's

Attention all shark paranoids......
If you die in the cruel sea doing what you love, it is a fact that you will come back re-incarnated as a dolphin.

There you go, I bet you feel much better now.

Tourboat operators who attract sharks with big chunks of bloody meat so dumb tourists can gawk at the 'man-eaters' feeding in a frenzy should be horse-whipped.

We get a lot of hammerheads around here (Perth). There was a big one at the end of last season which closed down the Cotteloe beach one hot Sunday afternoon. I arrived to see 1,000 people playing on the waters edge but not a single person actually in the water.

I did a bit of reading up on hammerheads. The web site said there had been 352 reported attacks in the last couple of hundred years, but not one fatality. I took that to mean that we don't have to worry about dying if there is a hammerhead in the water, even though he might chomp your foot off.

Last Update: Saturday, March 19, 2005. 7:12pm (AEDT)

Man killed in shark attack

A man has been killed in a shark attack off the West Australian coast.

Police say the 26-year-old deckhand was with a group of tourists snorkelling off the Abrolhos Islands, about 500 kilometres north of Perth, when he was attacked by a six-metre shark.

It is understood the man died from massive injuries.

Police say the group was from a luxury charter boat called the Matrix, which was on its maiden voyage to the Kimberley.

Police say it was moored off Pelseart Island when the attack happened.

Nobody else was injured.

Police and fisheries officers are travelling to the island to recover the man's body.

but was he kiting,

sharks maybe a little dumb but they tend to be like macdonald's customers.

they eat what they think they know to be food.

somehow a kiter would very rarely be acting like food to them.

so I'll start to get scared when the first WA kiter gets bit, or SA kiter who cares.

I find this S thread fascinating.....a huge resource to challenge us all.

Personally, I find I am much too busy recovering from whatever stupid thing I did to even think about anything else..........but get going again, and asap.........because y'a never know what could happen next.

I agree with Ral Inn

So, better not to go out under-powered, at dusk and bleeding after being cut up by the reef.
