I am looking for advice on what kite to get my 12 year old beginner daughter (52kg).

I am definitely drawn towards the depower and relaunch ease of bow/sle kites and would prefer second hand because I know its going to get a thrashing.

Thinking about a sonic 8m but will the bar travel be too large for a kid this age??

Any advice on this or other options please.

Hi Matt,

I started kiting when I was 11 and about 45ishkgs, cant really remember now. I got a Peter Lynn ARC 630 but ut was a bit small. I would reccomend about a 7-9m kite depending on the wind range. I am now 14 and weigh about 56kg. I flew a 13m Venom but now have sponsorship from Catapult KIteboarding and will be flying a 11m or 13m most of the time. It mostly depends on the wind that you will get and the skill level of your daughter. I would reccomend she flys smaller kites first to get used to the power as she might be a bit afraid of the power of a big kite. Hope this helps,

I think That JL would agree with me that the type of kite plus a mentor are important for kids to progress with safety and confidence .I have seen a number of kids around Oz start out on PLK kites with a mentor supporting them and progressing really well .
JL for one Lloyd Wakewood another who in a short time have really come a long way.If you have a dealer or school in your area I would certainly consider PLK.

Another consideration is how well your kids can swim .My 12 yo daughter is now mastering the kite and whenever she asks I take her kiting .Personally i don't feel that she has the water ability or maturity to deal with an emergency situation on the water so for now it is on the land .

Cheers

When Lloyd learn't to kite, he started on an 8m lei.Found it so-so.He then started using a twin skin PLK.
His improvement rate was massive, and was having MUCH more FUN, less time with the kite in the water, and more time on the board.
This also saved me time assisting him.
Found it very very easy.
When it comes to teaching kids
get them the most stable kite going, and if your out there with them consider one for yourself. There'll be plenty of times that you'll be helping them out, and you'll need both hands free. The time invested will be well worth it. There have also been numerous times that Lloyd has assisted other kiters on the water, and the auto Z of his kite allowed him to help others without endangering himself, or ditching his kite.
good luck with whatever kite you get, and enjoy the buzz of watching your kids learn this wonderful sport.

It is really great to hear about younger kiters getting into this sensational sport, safely and with (obvious) great confidence.

I hear what you say about kite stability being super important and although I had not thought of a PL kite I will now check them out with interest.

I agree on the strong swimmer skills too - she has those.

Thanks for your input.
