Sorry guys and girls you prob have read a topic like this many times. I have windsurfed for many years (not that great) and really only on flat water as I love the speed factor but now feel the need for air time. I have now sold up after not using it for years but always wanted to get a kitesurfer.

Any advice would be great so I dont fall into the pit of buying the wrong gear. I live in Sydney and use to windsurf at Narrabeen lakes and some at five dock and botany. I know no shops or what the hell to get. From my limited knowledge I also thought I might get a landboard so I can practice on that as well (I dont know if this is a good idea or not).

Also I would like to get some lessions when I am all setup, so if you know where or who would also be great to know.

Also should I get 2nd hand gear or new.

Anyway ill go back to the forums and keep reading up and try to pick up some tips.

Thanks in Advance

Akita.

In a few lessons from a good instructor, you will try a few kites and boards. When the time is right for you, your instructor will help you to choose the most suitable gear. Lessons will save you a lot on the long run....

In my opinion, first step....buy/borrow a trainer kite. Then, get lessons before you buy gear.

Unfortunately they are a bit daunting as they cost up to $300 for a 3 hour lesson, but there is no way to learn without them. Your instructure will guide you on the gear to purchase

buy 2nd hand gear to learn. but not older than 1-2 years. Dont buy a C kite to learn with. it will take you longer.
make sure the gear you buy is in good condition... lines, knots etc.

oh be prepared for some turmoil in your personal relationship.

Question if I get a training Kite do I need to get a harness and stuff to get use to all that or do you just use them in your hands?

And don't underestimate big marks comments re: relationship turmoil!

My g/f simply cannot get a coherent sentence out of me if the wind is blowing and I'm somewhere other than the beach.

You will also stare at trees more then you ever thought possible. The first sign of a rustle and you will be able to think about nothing else.

Good luck!

Yea I know what you mean, I was that bad when I was windsurfing. Even when I was not into it, I would hear the wind blow and thing of a better place LOL

Hey Akita

Heed the lesson advice as a fully powered 'uncontrolled' kite can be the equivalent of a tow rope dragging you behind a car

you'll make the transition to kiteboarding quite quickly from having a w/surfing background as i did, and become a local SkyPilot in no time YEEE HAAAA

But Lessons Safety Lessons Safety Lessons First !!!!!!!!!

Cheers

Thankyou all for your advice. I got a training kite and have now spent many hours dragging me along down the local park, great fun. Hopefully I am booking in for lessons this Saturday (2 hour session). Oh and also got a dvd (progression) to help me with some tips.

I really cant wait to get out and try it. I will spend more time in between now and this weekend on the trainer.

Akita.
