Not sure who is who is telling their students to practice out at Kurnell but I had to tell another beginner to pack his kite up after he tried to go out on his 12 in gusty 20-30 knot winds at Kurnell late yesterday afternoon.

Turns out his instructor told him to come to Kurnell because he would lose his board at Dolls....

I would've thought Dolls would be a much better idea, just downwind of the crowds? Either way I'm pretty sure Kurnell is probably one of the worst spots to learn in Sydney with the Groynes, road and houses all so close to where you launch and ride. If I'm behind the times and something here has changed just let me know, but I've seen experienced riders come unstuck out here a fair few times because of the groynes and I'm sure a learner is only gonna be worse.

Not sure who the instructor was, but hopefully they read this.

The only reason Kurnell would be bad for Learners IMO is because of the groyns being so close together there. Kurnell is pretty shallow shich makes it great to learn so long as the Beginners keep well out of the way of other kiters.

Normally the more experianced kiters tend kite on the far east beach well away from the grassy bit for the beginners to learn at.

Dolls is sketchy due to the current there. If a newbie looses their board there which is bound to happen it will be drifiting far awat before they work out how to body drag back to it.

So you think down at Bonna Point? Seems fair. The only thing against it is that there are oyster covered rocks on the bottom out there and these really big oysters that stick up out of the grassy areas (dunno what they are but they're about 20cm high and super sharp). Plus once you get past the sandbar there is that big drop-off where you can't stand (and it sucks getting back up past there in a NE when the tide is rising and your underpowered), then the next stop is the mangroves on the other side.

they aren't these things are they?

if they are pull them out they multiply!!
lake macquarie gets alot of them at the minute because professional fisherman have stopped netting the bottom. you usually find them in good places to kite as well so get rid of them.

That's them! They're pretty deadly looking things, I'd hate to go bodydragging over one. Are they native or are they a pest? I'd love to go ripping them up if they're not meant to be there.

And you mean the sea urchins? Yeah I hate those little bastards. Or better yet the stingrays :) I saw one of the guys cop one in the foot out here, looked like someone had stabbed a pen into the top of his foot.

Haha, I figured it would be your doing Hook. When are you guys coming up next? I keep saying I'm gonna come down but I'm pretty $h!t when it comes to doing anything. Where are you kiting these days? St Kilda? Do you still need a 4/3 at this time of year down there?

Commonly known as Razorfish, they will open you up to the bone if you tread on one

All of our southern gulf areas are infested with them. They live in the sea grass beds but open sandy bottoms are usually clear of them

I bloody well hope not, moving back to Melbourne on Friday from London and this time last year in Melbourne I was in boardies and a rash vest. Packing the wetsuit to be shipped to cut down on weight. Probably pick up a shortie if I go out of the bay.

kurnell is a no no for beginners full stop.
there is just not enough room .groins are way too close to even consider trying to learn there. leave the spot clear for experianced riders it`s not worth getting a face full of rock and oysters. imo
