don't let it invert by, for example, ****ing up something so well that you crash it into the water and let the lines go slack for long enough for it to roll over, or however they get that way. 5th line is then wrapped full loop around your kite and could be bad for it if it powers up.
Some of them also help the kite keep its shape a bit, so you've got to have them the right tension to get the best performance.
that's about it. Pretty simple really.

Hi Dangler,
5th line system is nowadays one of the most reliable and easiest safety system on the market. It increases the stability of your kite, offers you back up options for safety, makes relaunching easy as pie, and avoid "spaghetti sessions" after opening your safety.
All together, it's pretty straight forward, just make sure your retailer (or whoever you get your 5th line kite from...) teaches you how to use it and set it properly.
Give it a go! it might confuses you when rigging at the beginning (even though, there's nothing that tricky about it!), but you well get used to it in no time and appreciate the benefits of it....
Hope this helps...

This is all true, however 4 line kites are making a comeback in the form of bow/hybrid/sle designs. They offer many of the same benefits of a fifth line (full depower, easy relaunch, etc). You might want to learn about those if you have a choice to make.

Thanks all for your responses, good point about tuning it right and keeping the line tension, given my best trick used to be the 100m downwind body drag line tension shouldnt be a problem! and I think I can probably go one better on the invert line twist trick by combining it all with a wrap around the nearest moored fishing boat!
Thanks again, take care and see you in A&E
