Hi all.

Now before I get flamed for not using the search button, I have but to no avail. I am chasing some info on kiting at Cotton Tree on the coast. I am up that way on the weekend and am considering taking my gear with me so I can get a kite in, as last weekend was non existent and I am going through withdrawel Symptoms.

Where at Cottontree do you launch from? Do you kite in the flat water inside the bar or even further up the river? I have mostly kited at Sandgate so can deal with chop but have never been in the bigger waves that you get at the beach on the coasts.

I grew up on the Sunny Coast but have lived in Brissy for the last 20 years as work and uni dictated.

Anyway, any guidance, advice and help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

why dont you just wait until you get to cotton tree.
as long as you know how to get there you will be fine.
if theres wind, youll defiantly see kites out.

if still confused, ask friendly locals.

When you get there, be sure to ask someone how to pump your kite up.Then when you have achieved that, look for a friendly local to show you where to put you kite down so you can connect your lines.Once lines are connected be sure to ask one of the more experiance kiters if you have got it right. When you have put your harness, life vest, helmet and legrope on(remove rollerblades first) Look for same experienced rider and ask for assistance.Make sure all hand signals are clear. This might mean running through the signals atleast three times. So when your ready for launching be sure to yell loud as possible" KITESURFER LAUNCHING,KITESURFER LAUNCHING" This is standard procedure at the mouth. The rest is self explainatory.Hope you have a safe and fun weekend.See you out there.

dude, if there's enough wind to go out, there will be 20 other guys there already. you just launch from the beach where everybody else is launching from. it's rocket surgery i know, but believe in yourself and you can do anything.

I was. Was just after some basic info as to kiting at Cotton Tree but it seems that it is too hard for someone to say. "We normally park at such and such carpark, walk to the beach on the inside of the river mouth and launch from there." Apparently english must be a little too difficult for some to understand, let alone communicate back with. Of course I can just turn up, and I am more than capable of kiting adequately and so on. As with many things in life, I am sure that most people will get some basic information about something that they are looking to do or buy, prior to actually doing so, that is all was asking for. I will leave it at that, and unless you have some information that is worthwhile to add to this post please do not respond.

Bunch of smart arses, give the man a break !!

Go to the car park on the corner of cotton tree parade and alexandra parade. You can pump up on the grass in front of your car, as it will likely be blowin se launch from the beach(surf side) and head to the river mouth from here. If it were blowin ne you could walk through the caravan park to the inside river section but probabily not a good idea tomorrow.

Good luck and have fun.

whats there to tell? theres only really one spot you can park (main carpark), and you kite directly in front of this. Or if you after flat water head into the river mouth.

its so funny, how all these smart ass replies, will be the same people who get on and post comments about some "kook" who turned up to their "local" and launched in the "No launch" area and kited in the "no - kiting" zone that is locally regulated, and then everyone gets on saying you should just ask before going to a new place, here a guy is trying to be responsible and educate himself about a new area and all the legends get on being tools and offer no constructive advice, good on ya fellas best way to have your "local" banned, this sport has no one else to blame except for its own people in getting it banned, and as we are stupid humans who see the warning signs, and we all talk the talk about regulation / education, but we still head down the same path of ignorance and places start getting banned, and then we all rally together and say why? how? who?. This sport is a minority, represented again by an internal minority of tools from within, who will get it banned for good, it only takes one tool to ruin it for us all, wait til the first tool decapitates a 4 year old girl at your "local" with a runaway kite, from what ive seen around the place, it will happend, its enevitable. So next time some guy is asking for advice think about what pro-active measures your taking to help this sport prevail before you comment, or dont winge when the sign gets put up and it will! at your beach.

Orynoco, thanks for the info. Is exactly what I was after. Davem207, I could not agree more, I will still be talking to the locals tomorrow if I end up there, raining cats and dogs at the moment my mum and brother both told me this afternoon so I am hoping that it is not the case tomorrow. Am staying up there for the weekend for a family thing, so am looking forward to a kite tomorrow afternoon.

Cheers and safe kiting to all. :)

Sounds to me like you should kite somewhere else. The responds posts from the "locals" seems like the spot is full of hard core legends, just ask them.
It might seem not hard to know what to do at your spot, but if you have never been there its a different story,he just wanted to know the do's and donts. He was trying to show a bit of respect and just got sh!t on by the "friendly locals".

your actually better off to lauch just below the plaza, in the canal thing. just make sure the tide is going out and you also have to keep the kite low under the bridges. also dont drop your kite like that kook on the old fuel.

rather head right out to the point and launch there....dont worry if you dont know how to stay upwind or relaunch your kite yet...make sure the tide is running in!
I saw some guys out there today and they was doing quite well
