Hey all,

Would really like some feedback as I seem to be getting lots of chat from people who dont kite or surf.

Im moving to aus on a business visa and so need to committ to 1 state for 2 years. Ive been living in lanzarote (canary islands) for 5 years and now south coast of England.

Im torn about whether to move to Perth area or sydney area. I have loads of friends in sydney but Perth area looks amazing. I dont want to be in either of the cities, ideally find a place somewhere on the beach next to a break where its windy. Im looking for somehwere without the 'local hussle', where it takes a year before you accepted at the point. Somewhere friendly and not all about surf and drugs.

I'm more of a wave rider rather than a flat water freestyler, and really want to be within walking distance from a kite beach. With Perth sounds like there are alot of options going slightly north and sydney looks more crowded. I dont want to name any names as too leave an open canvass. Anyone got any thoughts, exact loactions or ideas about either place? Any input much appreciated!

If you have to work in the CBD in Sydney, and you live at any DECENT beach, I suggest you purchase this coffee cup:

make sure you put 2 hours worth of coffee in it.

You could live near Bondi or Coogee if you like tiny houses, needles and condoms on the beach, rubbish everywhere, and not sleeping at night because your neighbours are ALWAYS maggot. (oh did I mention they have bad surf and no kiting options)

yeah, gotta be west coast Geezer.
Bit restricted on the old night life (i'm a Londoner, south of the river) but in summer after kiting 7 hours a day for weeks on end, a cold one on the beach is all anyone has got energy for![}:)]

Is there any beach near sydney that has waves and can kite on, thats friendly to live by?

Any suggestions for where I would head in Perth?

Perf, innit.

Go west young man, for all that you seek.

Sydney is a harder city to live in than London in many ways. Worse public transport, intense work driven people.

Go to Perth, the beaches are better, less crowded, wind you can set your watch to. You just have to deal with being thrown back in time by about 20 years I reckon.

Perth might have wind - but seriously, the waves are absolute crap.

At least Sydney has cranking waves

There are far better places (with enough work possibilities) north of Perth with completely uncrowded waves and heaps more reliable wind.
Unfortunately though you'll need to 4 wheel drive a whole 10mins from town center to completely loose sight of people.

Thanks all! Looks like perth WA is the winner, as I thought. Anyone know of any good (cheap but not dingy) places to stay in perth when i arrive to get my feet?

If you can work and live anywhere you choose you are indeed fortunate. Few of us have this option. When you find this little patch of heaven on earth - keep it to yourself.

Another vote for Perth Dude - yep - it is about 20 years behind and don't expect great night life - but the coastline is amazing, there are hundreds of kilometers of it and the kiting rocks.

If your sole creterion is kitesurfing, then there is no doubt about it. Perth is the pick bassed on wind.

But Sydney gets good waves, has awesome beaches and wicked night life. Problem is your only likely to get a seabreeze every second day. Sometimes the drought can be a week or more in the summer.

If your planning on a 9-5 lifestyle with no car, then you are pretty much f*cked in Syd except for weekends. Saying that, I live in Newtown (20 minutes to flat water, 30 minutes to waves), plus work in Mascot (10 mins to flat - 20 mins to waves). So I can basically go out every day there is wind. Plus surf everyday there is waves (10 minutes from work) in the winter, so it's not all bad. If you are limited to weekends, you are pretty screwed as you might get unlucky 2 or 3 weekends in a row whereas Perth you are basically guarenteed both days.

Crowds aren't that bad in Sydney. Although I have nothing to compare it to, I just move up or down the beach a little if it is getting crowded Just don't go to Dolls
