I'm glad you made it through your close call. Another lesson to learn is not to be out there in the first place if you are not comfortable with self landing. If you cannot hit your safety in and instant and land your kite by your self - you should not be kiting in the ocean.

This could almost be a criteria for people who want to kite at places like Scarborough. They should be comfortable with self launching and self landing. To many newbies cop out and have to rely on other people, for to long - that is ok 99% of the time ........ till they get caught in a dangerous situation by them selves.

We know - we've been there.

Had there been a problem I had my hand on the trigger. However the beach is too small to self land in a westerly...

It is one of the nice things about kitesurfing .... the commeraderie and community that help launch and land kites, but this can make you lazy and develop a false sense of security for times when you come back to the beach after everyone has packed up and gone. It is an essential skill to know what to do in all situations, not just the easy safe ones.

If you are coming in to a narrow beach in onshore winds, pull the pin whilst you are out in the water so that the kite lands on the beach and then wind your lines in the water in the manner prescribed in our Tips and Advice page. If you are worried about kite damage, drop it on the water and roll your lines. I know the latter option is unpopular due to getting a wet kite before pack up, but it's better than some of the darker consequences should things go wrong.

Learning this and other self reliant skills you will never need anyones help and will develop a better level of confidence in your own ability. It doesn't mean disregard the help of others, just know how to handle yourself.

Good winds,

Djo... "Thanks cotts windsurfers" ...

May be the reason all the people ran off and not helping you land was that, as a windsurfer, I got no $#$&en idea on what to do to help you. May be a bit of friendly chat between the "tribes" may be beneficial....

Yep red your right, just that the conditions weren't adequate to chat.

Darren, get your point.

Being an ex windsurfer I just find it so sad that on a spot we behave as perfect strangers, we're all out there for the fun.

I'm not blaming anyone. I can kite by myself on my own like a grown up, but that's not why I kite.

Different strokes for different folks - personally I do a solo sport coz it's all about me - don't get me wrong I've retreived heaps of boards, dragged people in, lauched, landed and talked to other kiters heaps. But when it's all gone sour I'm the one I blame. If I need to rely on someone to save my arse they have been in the car on the trip to and from the beach - I certainly wouldn't bet my well being on random strangers. Sports with high levels of reliance are team sports and IMHO kiting solo dosen't fit in to that genre

Hey Surgeon,

Djo didn't self-land his kite because it would have gotten wet.
Slack kite-bettys are to blame.
LOL.

Good to see ya.

Yeah, I don't get this dry kite fetish.
At the end of a sess,
your wetsuit's wet, your harness is wet, your boardies, rashie, bar and lines are wet.
Your fucn body is wet.
Hey, it's a water sport....derrrrr.

LOL.
