I have been speaking to a few people, and also reading some articles on washing down kites with fresh water. I have heard so many conflicting oppions I thought that I would send this post. What I have been told to believe is that fresh water on a kite is a no go, and to just let the kite dry out to stop mold. However, I have read of people washing off there kites with fresh water, and even using detergent? Contradicting views? What do you recon?

If you wash your kite with fresh water and detergent make sure you let it dry before you pack it away. Mold spores are everywhere and love warm, moist conditions. Mold won't grow on a kite still wet with salt water. (salt kills mold spores)

There's probably a law against washing down kites with tap water.
Water restrictions were around when I was a kid.
****, it's not like the government hasn't known about our water crisis for some time now.

Cold Power and the "wash and wear" cycle have served me well before. Whatever you do not wash with hot water or use a tumble dryer... my 16m Naish X2 ended up as a 9m, and is now pink because someone left a red sock in the washing machine.

Piss on your kite..4 reasons below:

1. no one will steal it

2. you save water

3. you always know where it is

4. if you are down, chances are sharkie goes after the smelly kite, not you.

Salt water is very important in adding stiffness and shape to the kite. I now only have to pump up my bowkites to 2psi. Im giving it one more season and will start using them as foil kites. If you kite in freshwater lakes remember to rinse in saltwater afterwards

Hey Justin

Check out this topic from the FAQ section

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4985

It has all the info you need on washing and caring for kites.

3 main tips
  • Don't rub the sand off your kite with your hand especially of the sand is wet. This works like sandpaper. Rather inflate the kite, let the sand dry and shake the kite to get the sand out.
  • Keep all sand out of bladders
  • If you have been kiting in fresh water, dry the kite before folding up
  • Inflate the kite and wash out the seams between the struts and canopy and between the leading edge and canopy. Sand in these areas can cause wear during flying. I only do this every 6 months (maybe 40 sessions or so)

Don't clean your kite every time - you'll get tired of the hastle. I just fold mine up and stash it away after a session. I do the drying and shake sand off every month or so.

hi,
i remember this stupid windsurfer at point moore waisting gallons of water to rince his equipment everyday.... and then leaving it in the sun to dry !
if you were unlucky to have your stuff next to the shower, he would not even think about wetting your kite too.....
i left my kites for 6 month now without rincing them and they look ok.

ya, its easy to keep the kite clean, i just throw it by the laundry door and it gets put in the machine, mum does a great job of ironing it as well, think she used starch. the grass stains come out a treat with bleach.
