Hey Gasman, or anyone...from where comes the term gromet or is it grommet?

Applied to ankle biter surfer?...but why, help this non-surf-cultured idiot please.

And I'd rather not Google it.

Little kids get middle ear infections that sometimes require a drainage tube to be surgically placed in the ear drum. The idea is that little surfers spend all day in the water and get ear infections ........ so end up getting grommets. Funnily enough this should keep them out of the water! I suspect non surfers get the same number of infections, but the name's stuck.

Hey Gas, I still don't get it...you'll have to explain to me in Denham on the Downwinder on the 25th...can't wait.

I caught an hour at the Wally Spit this am....not really enough, but it was sooooooooo beautiful, but too cold for most. Fell on a rock in my eagerness and bruised some ribs....silly boy.

Man do I need some warm weather and clean wind.

i think 'grommet' derived from the word 'gremmie' meaning novice or someone with poor form. Which i think 'gremlin' may also have come from... The world war pilots used to call the imaginary little beings that messed with their engine mechanics 'gremlins'.
Surfer's used the word 'grommie', 'grommet' or 'grom' to mean little surfer.

Gasman,

my younger brother was never a surfer, but he got tubes put in his ear.

(he's surfed a bit since then... but never before he got them in)
